Problem with embedded subs

Hello everyone!

I made a movie in Japanese with embedded English subs.

It's a pretty big file - a 30 gig mov file.

When I converted it the subs disappeared.

It's strange because I converted this movie before some edits and there was no problem.

I've tried another converter and it worked fine without the subs disappearing. But I prefer Handbrake because it converts at a better quality.

Any ideas?

What format are the subs in? libav doesn't even detect that there is a sub track on that file. It only sees audio and video.

Well...I think the subs were just added to the video file...the same way you would add credits or title cards, that's why this seems strange to me.

You made this movie, but you don't know what the source of the subtitles was? What was the extension on the file you imported? Was it .srt, .ass, .ssa, .vob, or what?

MediaInfo might be able to tell more; alternatively, if you embedded the subs yourself, can you detail the procedure and software you used to do so?

I am a little confused. Why would you want to know the text file name? I always thought the program that embeds the subtitles converts those text files to some fixed internal subtitle format. Also, is prores video a problem?

If you can supply the text file name in its entirety including the extension then someone can determine if the subs were SRT, ASS, SSA, VOB etc.

What he said. The file extension is not a 100% sure way of determining what type subtitles are being discussed, but it goes a long way towards it.

There are types of subtitles that handbrake understands, and there are types it doesn't. SRT subtitles are the only one that (currently) can be merged in during the encode, but they are converted INTERNALLY to a common format. Graphic subtitles, like VOB and PGS, are not converted... depending upon the output file type, they're either attached (MKV) or burned in (PGS in MP4).

But, if handbrake can't figure out what the format is, it could be a bug or an unsupported format.

OK, I still don't get it. The sub has to be displayed at the time the picture is displayed so the sub is embedded in the appropriate video frames. There is no text or time stamps anymore. Asking about file names can be annoying(especially for Apple users) and a little insulting when you spout all those file names. The names aren't meaningful in this case, in my opinion. Sorry, but I am a little too sensitive after being on the other end.

I'm more interested if FFmpeg can handle subs in those Apple containers. The container can use the same video as mp4, I guess.

If he's not seeing subs after the encode, they couldn't have been in the video frame unless they were in a part of the frame he's cropping out (we have no idea since he chose not to supply the encode log or screenshots).

I'm completely confused by the rest of your post where filenames are considered insulting, but if you're interested in ffmpeg you should try a forum about... ffmpeg.
