[Fixed] Theora fails in 10.0 (works in 9.9)

Post by FlyingMoose »

I have been encoding video into MKV files using the Theora codec in version 9.9. It has stopped working in 10.0.

In version 10.0, it appears to succeed, but when played back, the video freezes after a few seconds. In VLC, the slider jumps to the end, and in other players it continues normally. The audio plays fine for the whole length of the video.

This problem happens with different input files and different players, but seems to be unique to the Theora video codec. The size of the output file is approximately the same as one which works (produced by Handbrake 9.9).

I am running on OSX 10.9.5.

I downloaded both versions from handbrake.fr.

Here is the activity log from a failed 10.0 conversion:

Re: Theora fails in 10.0 (works in 9.9)

Post by nexradix »

I have the exact same results. I ran a test using Big Buck Bunny in case you want to reproduce with the exact same file (this one: http://mirrorblender.top-ix.org/peach/b ... stereo.ogg)

I'm running the latest nightly build (svn7124) as of this posting.

I know Theora is being phased out for various reasons in favor of VP8, but I still rely on it heavily for now and would love to see this fixed if possible.

Here's my activity log:

just a question about theora (I didn't want to open another thread for that):
isn't it possible that you could reuse some of that code for daala?

or do you think it doesn't make sense to leave it in, because daala is entirely different or because you could get the older code from your git anyways?
