Issues with Handbrake 0.10.0 and aTV2

Post by thanar » Sat Feb 07, 2015 8:59 am

Hello,

I've been using Handbrake since forever and had no issues whatsoever compressing footage taken from different sources for archiving and playback. I recently have been using an aTV2 to playback the videos with reside on a macbook running 10.6.8 with iPhoto.
Here's the thing: Since I upgraded to HB 0.10.0, no matter the settings, I cannot get the videos to play on aTV. Even on Quicktime, the converted videos diplay black when opened, although the first frame is NOT black. Same happens in iPhoto thumbnail on each HandBrake-converted video.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[edit]
I did some testing from ground-up.Here's an archive with four files: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9478420/hb_test.zip. "hb_test.mov" is the original file as captured by QuickTime Player 7.6.6. The other three are HandBrake exports using the presets in each parenthesis. NONE of them three play on the aTV2 and all three show a black frame when opened on QuickTime Player. However, scrubbing forward and back to beggining shows no black frame.

OK, this is getting interesting... same sources encoded with 6874svn is producing files that play OK on all, QuickTime Player, iPhoto and aTV2... Any help?

Added both 0.10.0 and 6874svn encodes on the archive; svn's encodes are a few bytes smaller, 3kb/sec lower data rate. ffmpeg shows files are identical [banging head on wall]!

Please take a look at this issue asap, it's very easily reproducible. Downloaded release version again just to make sure; issue still stands.

There was a little difference in the mp4 edit lists when we switched the mp4 muxer from mp4v2 to libav. It has been fixed in the nightly, as you already saw. But it's odd that 0.10 mp4 didn't work on the atv2… please provide the activity logs of the two of the two encodes (as per forum rules).

I did not provide an activity log, since the issue is very easily reproducible, on my side anyway. I will reencode right away and provide the logs as requested. In the meantime, could someone tell me what's the difference between the two encoded files, since I don't thing it's a muxing issue; i tried remuxing the "damaged" file with ffmpeg (using -vcodec copy -acodec copy) and the resulting file still doesn't play.

Would be greatful if you could provide more information on what happened, since I have thrown away the source files and would like not to re-encode in order to have aTV2-playble files...

I just tried a video from 0.10 on my aTV2 and it plays, can you uploaded the hb_test archive you references in your first post?

Jeez... I don't believe I did not reference the link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9478420/hb_test.zip

Mind you, the videos do not play if added to iPhoto library and then shared to aTV via iTunes home sharing (that's the official way to do it if you have a non-jailbroken aTV). All videos play fine through Infuse or other aTV unofficial media player.

The culprit could actually be iPhoto, since using the above method it seems to be preparing itself the thumbnails for aTV to use, so I guess it has something to do with the fact that the FIRST frame on all 0.10 encodes displays BLACK under QuickTime 7.7.1 (QuickTime Player 7.6.6, or QuickTime Player 10.0). It's NOT black, scrubbing and going back to start displays correct first frame.

Anyhow, have a look at the dual files, encoded with the two versions of the app on my setup and let me know if you make anything out of it...

Seems like I managed to make the "damaged" files playble by aTV2 by deleting the first frame with QuickTime Player pro and exporting the file to mp4, using pass-through for both video and audio. So I guess the 0.10.0 version of HandBrake adds some extra data in the first frame that QuickTime for some reason does not like.

Actually 0.10 didn't insert a black frame, it just moved the tracks by a few ms, I guess iPhoto saw no video or audio at the time 0 of the movie and got stuck. If you remove this empty space with QuickTime the tracks will be again start at the movie time 0, I don't know any automated way to do it.

Fortunately the next HandBrake version moved back the movie start at time 0, and iPhoto is going to be replaced soon.

That's what I thought. Apart from iPhoto being replaced (a ride which I cannot board, since I'm on a Core2Duo MacBook), movie start at time zero seems more logical, than adding a few ms at the beggining.
Anyhow, I managed to fix all videos by erasing the first frame using QuickTime Player Pro and exporting with both video/audio set to pass-through. Have to touch -t the files to fix the dates again, damn!
