Intel QSV stops

Post by Geofram »

Fairly often, when doing encoding using Intel QSV, the process stops completely. Handbrake does't 'crash', or even give up on the encoding, it just kind of hangs infinitely. An error code is listed at the end of the activity log whenever I see this.

I'm using nightly build 6117. Here's a copy of the log from one of the times it's happened.

Code: Select all

Most likely a (Beta) driver bug :P

Try adding "force-cqp=1" (without quotes) to the additional options box.

Hi folks,

same problem here. My system: Haswell 4770K, Win 8.1 x64, Handbrake nightly 6117 x64, Intel Media SDK 2014 ( API 1.8 )

This setup works flawlessly with Intel Driver 15.33.14.64.3412 WHQL ( API 1.7 )
Handbrake hangs but doesnt crash with Intel Driver:
15.33.15.64.3431 WHQL ( first driver with API 1.8 support)
15.33.0.64.3464 beta ( API 1.8 )
15.33.18.64.3496 WHQL ( API 1.8 )

This error is reproducible with different media files. It always hangs without crash with
the error posted in the log below

This is the log with driver 3496 and the suggested argument force-cqp=1:

one question - any option that you can share the input clip for me to reproduce the case?

also, as a test - can you try to transcode without using of chapter info?

Hi maxim_d33

First thanks for your interest in solving the problem.
Unfortunately i cant upload the file as its too big and my connection is pretty slow.
Nevertheless I tried it without the chapter info (unchecked "create chapter markers") and transcoding finishes without stopping!
I reinstalled whql driver 3412 afterwards and was able to encode WITH chapter markers.

So any idea why there is a conflict with the new driver and creating chapters in the encoding process?

nd4spd, there used to be several suspicious places
and chapter used to be one of them,
therefore - your support and confirmation that without chapters it works - appreciated

however, full fix is yet to come,
if you cannot upload the input video - just fine,
any option to upload your chapter file that we can see it?

Can you try the following please? Namely, encoding with:

- the latest driver (.3496)

- chapter markers enabled

- B-frames disabled (you can select Baseline profile or add "b-pyramid=0:gop-ref-dist=1" (without quotes) to the additional options box)

That wouldn't be very useful, the CSV file only contains the chapter names, no timestamps.

@rodeo

disabling b-frames resulted in a successful finish WITH chapter markers so this was the trick :)

besides you also stated to disable pyramidal b-frames. It also works without the extra argument
because it is disabled automatically by handbrake when you use chapter markers.

If you try to enable it manually (b-pyramid=1), as i did for testing purpose, the log says:
"chapter marker enabled, disable b-pyramid to work aroud a bug in our
keyframe insertion code"

I've tested this as well; removing the chapters made it work.

Changing it to baseline almost made it work, with chapters enabled.

I couldn't find a place to enter additional commands when QSV is enabled; the box disappears when you swap it off of it.

Can you be more specific of what you mean by "almost"?

Re: Intel QSV stops

Hi @maxim_33 & others,

Any timeline estimate for full fix?

With QSV, is setting the Baseline profile = Video -> Optize Video -> H.264 Profile -> Baseline (I have been using High)?

I have a partially working fix, the problem being that while it fixes this issue, it introduces another one. So it's not quite ready yet.

For the Intel (HD display 4000 drivers), where to find the latest ones to be used HB and QSV?

The tricky thing is, that using Lenovo T431s Laptop, the Intel Drivers are 'Windows 8.1 Inbox drivers', not Lenovo nor Intel ones.

So Can I update to drivers provided by Intel directly (and where to get them)?

I'd say yes, though maybe I'd keep a Lenovo installer around just in case:

Thx Rodeo.

Intel: Yes there are later ones
Lenovo: The Intel Graphics driver for this product is provided by Microsoft within your Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) installation for the following ThinkPad system = Windows Inbox drivers

So I can check with the ones from Intel when there is an existing fix for HB in the nightly builds.

Fix is in (will be available in tomorrow's nightly, SVN 6155 or later).

Try re-installing the driver - with this driver, Media SDK API 1.7 should be available, not 1.4, so something must have gone wrong during the install.
