CC Stream Not Showing Up as Stream in Mp4

Post by mp3axe »

Version: Nightly 57xx (from May 2013) to current (5933)
Downloaded: May 2013 - Current (15 Dec. 2013)
Platform: linux
OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
DVD: Person of Interest Season 1, Fringe Season 1
Is Reproducable: Yes

Bug: I cannot get the CC passthrough to show up as a usable stream in the Mp4. I specifically add the 'cc' stream to be part of the Mp4 encode. When I play it back in both VLC 2.0.x and 2.1.x I don't see the 'CC' Stream as an existing stream.

I'm not sure, but it looks like it's muxing an empty track.

Is it typical for DVD files to report that there is a 'cc' stream, and for the 'cc' stream to be empty? I have seen more than one tv series reporting 'cc' streams (Fringe is another example) but for this to happen.

The closed captions are converted to MP4 subtitles when I do transport streams(a picky distinction). I think captions are embedded in the video stream user data on both DVDs and transport streams. I have problems with some transport streams, too

That is correct. But that's not the issue here - HandBrake sees the track, but it looks like it's turning out empty.

CC user data will carry a continuous stream of NULL CC messages when there is no message to display. This is usually advantageous because we don't have to scan the entire file to determine if it has any CC data. A NULL message usually indicates that there is some valid CC message somewhere later in the stream. But in some cases, there will be nothing but NULLs.

OOPs. For some reason I am obsessed with captions. Never mind Besides VLC, I use ccextractor to debug CCs. If ccextractor doesn't extract them it is probably what John says, in my opinion.

Way off topic(sorry I am very new and don't know where to post, yet) I am going to install Ubuntu and play with my CC obsession. My goal is to burn CC's. VLC rendering of CCs is a beautiful thing where the captions can sometimes follow the speakers around. I haven't found subtitles that move like captions.

Heh, that would be a nice feature.

(sigh) I guess this should go on my TO-DO list too. Of course, since I'm adding stuff to it faster than I'm removing them, who knows when I'll have the time to work on it.

Well, let me add my request that this be fixed.

I've tried adding set files but finding the correct version for your disk set can be daunting.

Could you please be more clear. This thread covered a number of topics. What is it you thing needs "fixed"? As far as I am concerned, there is nothing to fix here.
