[Fixed] [svn5671]QSV: video fails with Lookahead

Post by gmb »

I have a video that fails when trying to encode with QS Lookahead. The full video is over 2 hours long, it just freezes and I have to restart my PC. The small sample over a minute freezes at 0,59%. Here is the small sample: http://www.file-upload.net/download-800 ... e.zip.html

Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled, now it works. I did some tests with older drivers by changing the libmfxhw32.dll and libmfxhw64.dll, I'm shocked that 15.31.64.2885 runs so much faster in a smaller resolution.

Advanced query field:

mbbrc=0:extbrc=0:gop-ref-dist=0:gop-pic-size=0:target-usage=7

1202x544, QP30

15.31.64.2885= 870 fps
15.31.1.64.3006= 499 fps
15.31.3.64.3071= 499 fps
15.31.9.64.3165= 499 fps
15.33.64.3214= 499 fps
15.33.0.3262= 499 fps
15.31.18.64.3272= 499 fps

Driver build 2885 is so much faster. How is that possible? There must be some sort of fps cap at 500 fps in newer drivers or maybe it's a Handbrake specific thing. I want 2885 speed back, is this a driver thing or Handbrake specific?

Not sue yet. I saw that 499fps issue to. It appears to be artificial as you say. It's something to do with the decode but that's all I know at the moment

Is there a way to check if QS hardware decoding is running? Maybe with the 2885 driver the QS hardware decoder fails and the CPU does the decoding job. The CPU consumption is still very low around 20% despite the much higher fps. On a very low resolution I can reach 1600 fps (CPU consumption 40%).

Nope, the way it's setup in HB, this cannot happen. If QSV decoding fails, the whole job fails.

The question remains why driver build 2885 driver is so much faster. In this video it is obvious that new drivers are limited to 500 fps which must be a deliberate driver cap from Intel. Why they are doing this? I guess I have to ask them. Maybe they thought 500 fps is more than enough lol.

QSTranscode is finished in 60 seconds, a bit slower but still crazy fast. The CPU utilization with QSTranscode is way lower however. Handbrake utilizes the CPU with around 40% and QSTranscode with just 10%. Same video, settings, driver of course.

How about audio settings? That uses the CPU too ;-)

Without audio:

CPU utilization ~15% and +280 fps. The audio causes the CPU load indeed.

The new nightly with QS is much slower, is this correct? Here same with the new nightly audio disabled:

The new version lost more than 400 fps.

Might be related to an issue in the GUI that wasn't setting the quality flag, so it may be target bitrate.

Re: [svn5671]QSV: video fails with Lookahead

That aside, the nightly 5747 QSV has serious issue with constant quality and average bitrate selection when Intel QSV engine is selected.

gmb, did you notice the log [18:23:10] encqsvInit: RateControlMethod AVBR TargetKbps 1000 ? :lol: Even though Constant Quality is selected, the QSV overides it with 'default' average bitrate of 1000kbps.

I had QP 30 selected. It's basically a speed test and QP is the fastest bitrate mode for Quicksync. If it run in AVBR mode then it's not a surprise that svn5747 is much slower here.
