System Hangs/Freezes

I have a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio with a 1.8ghz Sonnet Encore/ST G4 processor upgrade card, a LACIE DVD+-RW with Lightscribe drive, an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with 128mb VRAM, and 1.5gb of SDRAM. I am using the latest version of OS X 10.4.8.

When I try to rip anything in any format from a DVD, at a random time during the ripping process, my system hangs. The DVD stops spinning and my screen freezes; my mouse cursor won't even move. This is NOT a kernel panic or the little rotating colorful ball. This ONLY happens while ripping something with MediaFork, and I also have the same problem with HandBrake. I have the latest firmware and drivers for my DVD drive, processor upgrade card, and video card. I also have the latest PowerMac G4 firmware. When it happens the mouse and keyboard become useless, so I am forced to manually restart by pressing and holding the power button or pressing the reset button on the face of the system tower.

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if I can offer any more information (console logs, etc.). Thanks.

A good first step in troubleshooting would be to rip the DVD to an image with Mac The Ripper first. Then apply MediaFork and/or HandBrake to the VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive.

That would at least let you narrow it down a little bit.

Some newer DVDs have a new (goofy) copy-protection scheme from Macrovision which requires getting your hands on a version 3.0 beta of Mac The Ripper in order to extract them at all. It could be bad sectors on the disks you are trying to rip themselves which are causing your nightmares.

I appreciate your advice; however, I don't have the space to rip an entire DVD's contents onto my hard drive. Furthermore, this happens no matter what DVD I try, and I know my entire DVD collection cannot have bad sectors. And as for copy-protection, this happens even when trying to rip a DVD of a homemade movie.

That's too bad, because it's also the only way to show that it isn't a problem with talking to your 3rd party DVD drive....

I tried ripping the entire DVD with MacTheRipper. I then ran MediaFork on the VIDEO_TS folder on my hard drive. However, I'm sorry to report that my system still froze. So, it can't be my DVD drive causing the problems. Also, my system also hangs when I use other programs like iSquint. Could my video card be the culprit?

Clearly MediaFork itself is not the culprit.

I would tend to start looking at either the G4 processor card or possibly even bad RAM since you are experiencing this with other apps as well. My intuition would be the processor upgrade card.

Without the exact same setup, it would be hard for us to troubleshoot on this end.

I doubt it's the processor, but just to be sure I'll put in the original 533mhz G4 and try again. If the RAM were bad, other memory-intensive processes would also hang the system. Since this only happens when trying to encode videos, I have a feaky sneeling that my graphics card may be malfunctioning, at least in that department. Come to think of it, I have had several kernel panics while playing games like Halo. I don't even think it's a Mac Edition card, but a PC card that was modified for Mac. But one step at a time. I'll swap out the processor and try that. Then I'll put in the original Rage128 video card and try it that way. And then I'll try them both at the same time if I need to. I WILL get to the bottom of this.

It is very unlikely the video card plays a role, as it has no bearing on encoding of video (only playback). I second the notion that the likelihood is with the processor, memory being secondary.

Both could be faulty and yet only show up during video encoding because that particular process tends to place burdens on those components that day-to-day computing activities do not.

Interestingly enough, I found out that Sonnet has been having lots of trouble with its SonnetCache extension under OS X. The company recommends removing it if you are having any problems with it; doing so would likely disable the processor's L3 cache, but perhaps would fix my problems. I uninstalled the extension and rebooted, noticing a dramatic slowdown in boot time. However, now when I run MediaFork, iStat nano reports much less strain on my RAM (before, it showed the RAM bar as full, most of it being red for inactive). That said, although MediaFork just crashed, it didn't take the entire system with it. I will paste the CrashReporter data below for analysis:

Well, I just had the same hanging problem without SonnetCache installed. I guess the next step is to put in the old processor. Good thing that Sonnet CPU has a 3-year warranty.

Well, I put in the original 533mhz G4 that came with the machine and it encodes fine now, albeit extremely slowly. Furthermore, I thoroughly tested my system's RAM with Memtest OS X (best $1.39 I've ever spent), and I'm glad to report it passed all verifications and tests with flying colors. So, one would logically think the processor is faulty, no? Thanks for all the help; I really appreciate it.

I just thought I would let you all know that I contacted Sonnet and they gave me an RMA. The tech support guy was very nice and helpful, even telling me that he had had the same problems once on a work machine. So, thank you all for assisting me with this issue and helping me rule out everything else. Being that this isn't a bug specific to MediaFork, you might want to move this topic somewhere else and close it, but that's up to you folks. Thanks again!
