Loose Anamorphic defaults to 720

Post by DJRobNM »

No matter what the GUI says, when I try to use loose anamorphic on the latest nightlies it defaults to 720 width. I increase the width to 1920 and start the encode and it spits out a 720 width file. This worked fine on the nightly I installed June 5th in order to get PGS subtitles. I upgraded to the release only to find out that PGS subtitles had not been added. I uninstalled and went with the latest nightly and I now have no way to do subtitles and loose anamorphic on my blu rays. I tested with several other blu rays.

I had been previously using the Universal preset and increasing width to 1920.

Anybody know where I can get older nightlies? I could always just downgrade to the one I was using June 5th temporarily.

This is the oldest build currently available: https://build.handbrake.fr/job/Windows/628/

No dice with that build. The build I installed June 5th worked perfectly. I wish I had saved the installer.

This is awful. I now have a backlog of Blu Rays with subtitles I can't use loose anamorphic and Universal preset.

The only setting that doesn't bump itself back to 720 width is strict; none, loose, and custom are all broken.

This means I cannot even make the 720p(1280 width) files for my legacy devices.

I tried using High Profile which still allows loose anamorphic but it broke compatibility with my Apple devices.

This is still broken in the latest nightly. No one out there has a nightly from a few weeks ago?

The next nightly build should behave slightly better. The tab is still in need of some TLC though, so probably best avoiding using custom for the moment.

After reading the forums for a couple of hours I've learned that I'm the only idiot who still uses Universal while most have moved on to High Profile.

While I wanted the files to work with Apple's ecosystem, that has become less of a concern with Android devices and improvements in media extenders and DLNA.

A couple test encodes yielded pretty good results with High Profile (at the expense of encode time of course) so I guess I'll move on too.

The only downside seem to be that older devices will have to work harder to decode High Profile as opposed to Universal. Universal runs fine in iTunes whereas High Pro stutters.

Thanks to Rodeo and S55 for all their great work!

FWIW:

1) Apple devices that support 1080p support the High Profile preset's output

2) Apple devices that don't support the High Profile preset's output don't support 1080p

So using Universal for 1080p because of Apple compatibility makes no sense.

However, using Baseline Profile H.264 (e.g. the Universal preset) may be the only reliable way to get 1080p to work on devices using the original NVIDIA Tegra platform.

Regarding iTunes for Windows, its H.264 decoder really sucks. You could probably get High Profile to not stutter by disabling things like weightp, weightb and b-pyramid, but players with decent H.264 decoders, as well as any hardware devices (which use hardware-accelerated decoding for H.264) won't have any trouble with it, even without the changes.

So, this seems to be what I just posted about in the "General" forum. When using loose, it defaults to 720p.

Not the same UI. Are you using a custom preset based on AppleTV 3?

Using the AppleTV 3 preset with web optimized checked and foreign audio search selected. That's all.

When clicking "Web Optimized", you disable the AppleTV 3 preset. You need to create a custom preset and select it before loading additional sources.

That's what I have done. Select the aTV3 preset, click web optimize and save it as my default preset.
