[0.9.6] Muxed subtitles are garbled

Post by gl0uk »

I just moved to 0.9.6 and launched a batch of encodes : all mixed subtitles are garbled.

They partially appear, sometimes truncated... This may look like an encoding problem...

Moreover, those subtitles cannot be exported from handbrake. Since I generally export my subtitles from handbrake to correct the unsolved line-endings bug, and then reimport them, I tried to do the same here. But with every movie compressed with 0.9.6, when i select a subtitle track in handbrake and try to export it, the procedure is as usual, except the saving operation is instantaneous and nothing is saved.

This is on an iMac corei5 2011 with macosx 10.7.3.

I guess I'll go back to 0.9.5

Could you be any more vague? Subtitles, as in bitmap subtitles? Text subtitles? From a DVD source? From an MKV file? From an MP4 file? From an external SRT subtitle file?

Activity Log please.

Thanks for your support in resolving issues with the new release. Be aware that 0.9.5 is now considered end of life and support requests may no longer be answered.

Well, nice of you ;)

This is about muxed text subtitles, like in the title : "muxed subtitles are garbled"

Source is an mkv file. But the problem seems to be the same from an m4v file or an external srt.

As for "garbled", I really don't know how to explain : it's chaotic. The first subtitle appears, then no other does, or, in other cases, some subtitles appear, along with unidentified chunks of text.

I've made one more test that i do not understand : i took an already converted (by 0.9.5, subs added with subler, plays with no problem) movie with subs and re-converted it with 0.9.6, also adding the same subs in srt.The results are somewhat unsettling : the previously muxed subtitle has now no output when i select it and can't be exported with subler ; the subtitle coming from the srt is garbled but can be exported. So I exported it (looks okay in a text editor), converted to UTF8 with encoding master (which announced for this file ASCII text and unix line endings) and reimported it in the movie with subler. The effect of this operation was no output for the second subtitle as well.

That's it.

I may add that I'm quite surprised to see that I got some much attention for this incomplete post, while when I previously posted a bug describing very precisely how the dual line subtitle bug was related to mixed line endings generated by handbrake, it got absolutely no attention from the dev team. Should have written "one line is not enough, will stop using subtitles !" ;)

hope this helps

Thanks for the enhanced description...
... but you still didn't supply an activity log. If you *really* want help, you need to read the rules regarding bug reports (rule 3 specifically) and supply the information that is necessary for us to diagnose problems.

Hmm.... a quick google search of "To.Kill.a.Mockingbird.1962.1080p.BluRay.DD5.1.x264-CJ" turns up some interesting links.

The point is that discussions on pirated content are not permitted on this forum!

Typically, forums posts that reference pirated content are locked, deleted, and the user is banned... At least that is how thing were handled.

I've been away from the forum for some time now, so I didn't want to outright deleted this as it appeared there *might* be a legitimate issue. The post has been updated, removing the name, so I'm ok with moving forward with this being a warning. I plan to hopefully catch up with the rest of the team and lock/delete/ban as I did previously.
