First 5 sec are grey in Quicktime x

Post by alehel »

I just encoded a copy of my dvd Battle of Planet of the Apes. When viewing the file in Quicktime X, the first 5 sec are completely grey, then it starts to break up a bit, and then the actual picture shows up. I'm posting three images here so you can see exactly what I mean.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/alehel88/5234251483/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alehel88/5234251417/

The interesting thing is that the video plays back flawlessly in Quicktime 7, VLC and Plex.

This has happened to a couple of other movies, but unfortunately, I didn't watch them straight away, so I didn't keep the encode logs. I do have the log for this one though.

For this particular endode I used RipIt to get the dvd over onto the hard disk first, but on earlier movies, I ripped streight from the disc, so I presume RipIt is not the culprit. Also, I tried watching back the RipIt files in Apples DVD player, and they worked like the original discs did.

I've still got the other 4 planet of the apes movies in my encode que, but once they are done, I will try and reencode and see if I get the same result every time I try this disc.

Doing this on Mac 10.6.5 using the 64-bit Handbrake nightly build nr svn3703

[EDIT] I've just gone through all the encodes I've done the last 7 days. I've done 19 movies and roughly 50 or so various tv episodes. Only two other films have this problem. Harry Brown and the first Planet of the Apes film. I will try and reencode and see if keeps repeating itself.

Know issue. Also, if you uninstall Perian you'll likely notice the same issue in QT 7.

You can work around it by adding qpmin=10 to your advanced x264 string.

P.S. the issue (which, technically, is a QT bug) was introduced in x264 r1804, which was committed as svn3697, 3 days ago.

Thanks. Seeing as this is a QT bug, I won't worry anymore about it. I rarely use it. I was just worried this might mean there was something wrong with my files.

Forgive my ignorance :p, but I thought x264 had qpmin at 10 by default. Has the new builds of x264 changed this value, thereby producing this qt problem?
