[Fixed] Win GUI Bug with Chapter Markers (for DVD & Video)

I'm running Handbrake svn2907 on a Windows 7 Pro x64 box. I think I found a little bug in the GUI concerning chapter markers. I might be wrong, but I think most of the built-in presets are suppose to try to create chapter markers. I think the only exception to this is the Legacy-Classic preset. However, when I select a new source, Handbrake usually deselects the "Create chapter markers" and grays it out so you can't even manually select it. The only time it doesn't gray-out that option is if I go to a DVD and select the video_ts folder. If I select the parent folder of the DVD, or if I select a non-DVD media file, the option is grayed out.

To get chapter markers enabled, I have to select a different preset, then reselect the original one that I wanted to use. To be clear, I can't just click on the current preset again; I have to first click on a different preset, then click on the original one.

This isn't just a GUI thing. Chapters are not created unless I go through that extra step of selecting a different preset and going back.

This looks very, very close to the issue addressed and fixed in http://trac.handbrake.fr/changeset/2930

However, I am reporting this issue mainly because I don't know if that fix resolves the problem with non-DVD media files. I don't really know what I'm doing reading the source code at the link above, but the change looks specific to DVD folders and ISOs.

You might quite justifiably wonder why I care about chapters from non-DVD sources. I'm reencoding some of my videos for my iPod Touch. I want to keep the higher quality version for playback on my computer and TV, but I don't really care about the quality on my iPod (but I'd like to save space). Since I'm not too concerned with quality, I'm just reencoding my existing Handbrake encodes, rather ripping DVDs and encoding from the original source. Chapters markers are nice to use, even on the iPod Touch. But, I've been forgetting to do the workaround described above, so only some of my videos end up with chapter markers.

I believe that I have experienced this same issue on svn2845. Opening any source that has chapters, regardless of the preset, will cause the chapter tab contents to disappear and the check box will be unselectable. Changing the title dropdown of the source to a different title populates the chapter listing and the create chapter markers checkbox is then selectable. This works fine until another source is loaded, then the above process repeats.

How about you stop using out-of-date code and upgrade to 0.9.4?

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this thread. I see this thread has been marked fixed. I just want to clarify my initial post (which I posted before 0.9.4 came out), since I'm still having this issue in 0.9.4. Maybe its been fixed in a development build. If so I apologize.

While the issue with chapters and DVD folders has been resolved in 0.9.4, I'm still having the same problems with non-DVD media files. For example, let's say my encoding source is an MKV file with chapters. After scanning the file the Handbrake GUI will gray out the "Create chapter markers" option. But, if I select a different preset, then go back to the one I want, Handbrake will "ungray" the option and let me check it. Even then Handbrake won't actually show the chapters in the table below the "Create chapter markers" option, but it will properly carry chapters into the encoded files if the option is checked.

To be perfectly honest, I was surprised that chapters from MKV sources can get carried over into encoded files. But I've done it multiple times. That's why I identified this as a possible bug.

I'm having this problem when using DVD TS folders ripped to the hard drive. When ever I load a new source the create chapter markers is grayed out and I must click on another profile and back to the original to get the option available.

-Version - HandBrake Snapshot SVN3036
-Date of download - 18 Jan 2010
-Location of Download (HandBrake Site)
-Platform ( Windows XP )

I am having this exact bug on the latest svn3036. My symptoms are exactly as identified above in which if I select a DVD folder to encode, the Chapter Markers checkbox is grayed out and I cannot select it, unless I switch presets then go back to the original preset I was using. This problem existed for me on prior versions, but was fixed on 0.9.4. I am running this on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I discovered that if the source folder is not named "VIDEO_TS," the create chapter markers option will be greyed out. Switching between profiles will reenable it (upon discovering this thread), but not let you customize anything. If you reference a VIDEO_TS folder, no profile switching is necessary and you have the ability to rename the chapters.
