[svn2829] VobSub Subtitels in mkv do disappear too fast

Post by Inc »

There is a problem when playing back encoded movies via handbrake including vobsub subtitles on a WDTV Device.
The subs do come up but disappear immediately, when playing back using VLC this wont happen.
Ok, I thought this would be a WDTV firmware issue but when "remuxing" the mkv out of handbrake using mkvtoolnix again to mkv including everything by just importing the mkv and start muxing – the problem is solved.
So it seems the muxing engine of handbrake does its job different than mkvtoolnix.

When setting up the encode in Handbrake I do choose the "default" flag and no "burned in" option.

Can someone duplicate this ?

-Version svn2829 i386 (2009091601)
-Date of download 09/19/2009
-Platform (Mac, Linux, Windows) Mac i386
-Settings (video encoder, picture dimensions, etc.) no filtering, just scaling proportionally down to 640xXXX - non anamorphic
-Operating System version 10.5.8
-If possible, a crash report no crash occured
-DVD title It's Title independant, this issue happens on all encodes where I do let handbrake include "non burned in" VobSubs from orig DVDs
-What you were doing at the time besides encoding nothing
-What other applications were running No
-Whether or not the problem is reproducible (happens every time with the same settings/movie) yes with all DVDs (see remark on the bulletpoint "DVD Title" further above)

Thanks in advance and ... apologize "if" this issue has been already reported.

Re: [svn2829] VobSub Subtitels in mkv do disappear too fast

Post by Bling2Ming »

Yes same happens for me with HandBrake mkvs and the WD-TV. When I extract the Vobsubs from the mkv with mkvextract the external subs generated play back fine.
As the support for internal vobsubs in mkv is a new feature for the WD-TV, I too assumed this was a bug in WD-TV firmware.

The vobsub stream has all the timing that should be needed embedded in it. It sounds like the WD-TV isn't using that information properly and instead it may be relying on the optional duration value that can be set in mkv. We do not currently set this for vobsubs as it would be duplicate information. If either of you are capable of building from source, I can create a patch that will test this theory.

John if you would like to create that patch I will give it a go.
However if you are busy on something that's a higher priority then I can wait, as the work around is simple enough and only takes a couple of minutes.

WDTVC.com states that new firmware is due any time http://www.wdtvc.com/2009/09/19/new-fir ... ming-soon/

I wonder if this firmware might fix the issue.

John the patch failed with the following. on SVN 2845 I'm using Mandriva 2009.1 on this machine.

Code: Select all

patching file libhb/muxmkv.c
patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line
Hunk #1 FAILED at 404.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file libhb/muxmkv.c.rej

Patch applies for me on a clean svn2845 checkout:

Code: Select all

$ patch -p0 < ~/Downloads/907.txt
(Stripping trailing CRs from patch.)
patching file libhb/muxmkv.c
patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line
Hunk #1 succeeded at 404 with fuzz 1.

Make sure you copy the text from the text entry box on the pastebin page.
Copy that into a text file and it should work fine.

If you used the download link, you must dos2unix the file.

For whatever reason, "patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line" is being generated because there's a final newline missing from the file. If you add a newline after the last line, that warning goes away. maybe mandriva has a goofy patch version that errors out on that.

Patched successfully now after copy > paste instead of downloading the file.

Currently running a 3 chapter FFMPEG encode now I'll report back in 5 minutes.

John
The patch doesn't seem to have worked, I'm afraid the embedded subs are still on the screen for only about half a second.

That's very strange. Because the duration information that it should be using isn't even part of the container. It's in the vobsub data. And it's reading and at least partially interpreting the vobsub data correctly. I really have no clue what else to try. I'll generate some samples and remux them to see what obvious differences there are.

Thanks for all this effort John.
I've just extracted the subs with mkvextract and remuxed them with mkvmerge resulting in an mkv with two sets of identical subs. On the WD-TV one set stays on screen for about half a second the second set works correctly. Strange!

How exactly did you go about this. Did you extract the vobsubs to an mkv or to a raw format? I would like to duplicate what you did and compare the tracks.

Ok

1. Extracted the Vobsubs with

Code: Select all

mkvextract tracks movie.mkv 3:movie.sub
2. Opened movie.mkv in MkvmergeGUI
3. Using the Add button next to the Input Files box I added file movie.idx (this file generated in step one along with movie.sub)
4 Changed output filename to movie-test.mkv
5. Clicked on Start Muxing button.

Thats all I did john. I hope that helps.

Yes exactly you're right, .... I made a typo when saying that simply remuxing the file 1:1 in MKVToolnix did the job.
Its the fact that I also had to demux the VobSubs first out of the mkv to sub/idx first before remuxing the orig mkv file where the orig VobSub track has been deselected and the idx file from above was added.

The most recent firmware provided by WD did not make that needed workout obsolete.

Maybe we should inspect the difference of both mkv outputs from HB directly and the workout from above to see what is needed.

Is this issue still being investigated? The remuxing obviously only takes no time at all, but it would be nice to have it working from the beginning. Or does it look like a bug in the WD TV live?

Thanks anyway for a great program!

I don't have any other ideas to try out and I don't have a WDTV. So this is dead for now. You're welcome to give the patch from above another try to double check Bling2Ming's results.

When opening a "fixed" handbrake-mkv (remuxed in mkvmerge as described in previous posts), in mkvmerge, the subtitle track "description" looks very different
to a "clean" handbrake-mkv.
Don't know if it matter, but anyway...

I may have found the cause of this problem. If anyone with a WDTV can build from source, I committed a possible fix so svn.

That works for me John. Tested with quick two chapter encode, and vobsub subtitles in mkv generated via SVN 2917 display correctly on my WD TV firmware version 1.03.01.

Again I'd like to say thank you for your efforts in getting this resolved.

I was having the same problem glad to hear it has been fixed! You guys really are the best! It still amazes me how many miles out in front hand brake is compared to everything else I have tried!
