Unusual DVD format, Handbrake doesnt see all chapters

Post by eattick »

I've been using Handbrake for quite a while, but never ran into a situation like this. I am hoping someone else has, and can help me figure out what the heck is going on. I have a DVD of an Anime that has four episodes on it. Unlike any other disc I have seen, the manufacturer did a very unusual method for the Titles and Chapters. The opening of the episode is in Title 1, the closing credits in Title 3. The content for the episodes is in Title 2, Chapters 1 through 9. When playing the DVD, you can see see the title and chapter changes happen, I use Media Player Classic to figure out what the proper chapters, audio track and subtitles are. For this particular DVD, episode 1 is Title 2, Chapters 1 and 2; episode 2, Title 2, Chapters 3 and 4; etc. So, when watching the actual DVD, you will see: First, Title 1, Chapters 1-3 play; Second, Title 2, Chapters 1-2 play; then third, Title 3, Chapters 1-3 before returning to the menu.

When I open the .iso file in Handbrake, it shows all the titles, but it only shows Title 2 as being 20 minutes long. The actual length should be four times that, since it hold the video for four 20 minute episodes. When I go into the Chapters drop down, it only shows every other chapter, i.e. 1, 3, 5... In other words, the beginning chapter of each episode, but not the remainder of the episode. Selecting the beginning chapter of the episode causes Handbrake to show a length of only 10 minutes, or half the episode.

I know this is a long shot, but has anyone seen this kind of behavior? And if so, how were you able to use Handbrake to correctly do the encode? Or... is there a solution besides Handbrake that can deal with this messed up DVD?

Thanks in advance.

Short of remastering the DVD with something like DVD Remake Pro, you don't have a lot of options. Posting your scan log may help.

Posting scan log, in case it helps. It looks like Handbrake just skips the even chapters.
Thanks again.

Re: Unusual DVD format, Handbrake doesnt see all chapters

Greetings,

From what I gather you are trying to do. Is to seperate out the individual episodes and encode them as seperate video files. If that is the case then I would use DVDShrink in Re-author mode and sort them out that way.

If it does not show you four seperate episodes, only one big one for example. Then you can use the Set Start / End Frames option to slice it up and save them that way. Drag the title over to the left panel. Right click on the title so it opens up the Start / End window. Drag the slider bars with preview.

You can also deselect whatever audio / subtitle tracks you want with Shrink as well. Remove layer breaks, P-UOPs, logical remapping of enabled streams. Is a pretty nifty little program. I use it to sort out episodes, do movie only, etc in No Compression mode before I feed the video to HandBrake for encoding. Of course after having ripped the DVD to hard drive already.

You said your format is .iso, Shrink may need to have that mounted first via Daemon Tools or your choice of mounting software. I rip to folders / VOB's mainly. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Rick

Thanks for the DVD Shrink suggestion, it appears that will do the trick. The only problem is that since the original authors separated the opening and closing credits into separate titles, I will have the episodes without the credits, but I can live with that.

Thanks again!

Glad to be of help with the DVDShrink suggestion. If you really want the opening and closing credits as part of the episode when you view. I suppose you could encode them seperately and then add all three (intro, episode, ending) together with mkvmerge. Don't hold me to that, never tried. Just a guess due to the program's name.

I use mkvmerge gui to add in subtitles I have ripped with VSRip until Handbrake can handle soft subs. Or to add in another audio track if I forgot to with HB. If you do use mkvmerge make sure you select the proper aspect ratio setting with vid file highlighted and in Format Specific Options. May also want to double check that the FPS is set correctly if not greyed out. As well as the correct languages for audio / subs so as not to confuse your player on playback. You might not have to do all these with the current version. With an older one I needed to otherwise things did not come out properly. Could have been my user error, but I make sure they are set correctly now none-the-less.

You did not mention your final format. So my above advice is dependant on you using .mkv. There should be equiv. programs if you are partial to .mp4 or whatever you are using. I like my AC3 playback via SPDIF passthrough to my home sound system. Which makes matroska the vehicle of choice for me. Plus I find it a nifty container to boot.

I figure if each episode has basically the same intro / endings you would only need to encode them once. Then append them onto each episode. All in all even if they are different they should be short and fast to encode. Just have to jump through a few extra hoops to get your final viewing product. Good luck.

Cheers,
Rick
