Windows version crashes with a socket exception on startup when my firewall is set to 'lockdown' ..that is no applications can access the internet.
When I unlock my firewall (to allow Handbrake to access the internet) the application works fine.
The bug is repeatable

What version are you using?
I can't remember how the update code works under 2.1 or previous versions as I have since re-written it. It should be able to recover from the execption unless its a really old version.
In the upcoming version the ability to disable automatic update checking on start-up will be available for you. I expect this to be released in the near future.
In the mean time handbrake simply accesses a file on my website to check the versions. You'd prob be best setting up a tempory rule to allow just handbrake access.
