.MOV to Xvid audio failure

Post by DesmondVT »

I record home videos using a compact digital camera that encodes to .MOV QuickTime files. I've been using a utility called MPEGtoAVI to convert and compress these videos for sometime, however that app is prone to crashes and the video quality is not great. I'd love to use Handbrake for this work, but an issue with audio output is vexing me. Specifically, when I try to encode to xvid, the resulting video (which looks great) produces a couple loud pops/noises and then simply plays silently. Again, good video, essentially no audio.

Based on a review of the log, it seems this digicam encodes to mono audio. Could this be the problem? The Handbrake log says, and I quote:
[07:02:24] ERROR - can't use lame mp3 audio output with mono audio stream 1 - output will be messed up
[07:02:24] work: sanitizing track 0 mixdown Dolby Pro Logic II to Stereo

I've tried encoding to AAC audio. That eliminates the pops, but results in just silence. No audio at all. Any thoughts on how I might work around this issue? I'm new to Handbrake (have used AVI.NET for DVD rips, assorted other mission-specific converters) and would love to move my work over to this promising looking utility. Below is the activity log. Thanks for any insight people can provide! DTV

Re: .MOV to Xvid audio failure

Not to bump my own thread, but it looks like this issue (and a possible fix in progress) are addressed in the Mac support forum, here:
http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7779

Looks like the problem is with HB's inability to support 8-bit audio.

Quite correct, a fix for this problem was recently checked into SVN and will be included in the next development snapshot.

...and before you ask, it should be happening Real Soon Now(tm). :)
