HandBrake 0.9.2 -> new options explained

Thanks a lot guys for your great work, I've been following the developments eagerly, like many others for sure!

I surely don't want to push anyone, but I find myself a bit hesitative in starting the conversion of my 5.1 DVD's with HandBrake 0.9.2 since I see some new options compared to HandBrake 0.9.1...

Anyone could provide a very brief clarification of what these are and when to tick these settings:
- HTTP optimised MP4 (I think I found this one already, has to do with optimising for streaming videos over http)
- Insert iPod Atom (Do I check this when I want an iPod (I don't have one yet...) to be able to play the video?
- VFR (does checking this one improve quality? I think it's by default unchecked because it might still not be working all the time?)
- 64 bit MP4 (I think it has to do with some iTunes/ATV filesize > 4Gb compatiblity?)
- Audio Tracks: what if I select the same 5.1 track for both Track 1 and 2? Will Track 1 be AC3 5.1 and Track 2 AAC stereo? (excuse me my ignorance)
- Dynamic Range Compression (I understand it's to increase the volume in the more quiet scenes? How can I know I should use it?)

There might be more, but this is what I found so far. Not sure if the 'windows' subforum is the best for this post, but couldn't find a better one...

Correct.

It improves smoothness of playback of NTSC material. It's unchecked by default because it is still 'experimental' - but we haven't had many cases yet where it's caused issues.

It allows creation of files > 4GB, but they are not compatible with many devices.

Not sure on that. Dynaflash?

It makes louds a little quieter and soft sounds a little louder, and can be adjusted to "flatten" the sound as much as you like. It's intended for use in less-than-ideal conditions (like an iPod on a train).

Well, not really sure to be honest, I am the macgui dev and I imagine we are talking windows here. But I can tell you how it works on the macgui if thats any help.

You *can* choose to encode from the same source track in both HB tracks 1 and 2. You can choose to use two different mixdowns if you want. HB by default should enable the first track in your final movie and disable the second (dont want to have both playing at the same time, right ?) Now, in terms of your scenario:

- Audio Tracks: what if I select the same 5.1 track for both Track 1 and 2? Will Track 1 be AC3 5.1 and Track 2 AAC stereo? (excuse me my ignorance)

The mixdowns of the two tracks would be whatever you choose in the track mixdown popups. However, in the macgui at least, the mixdown options available are determined by the codecs popup. What this means is that you could not have an aac track combined with an AC3 5.2 track the way you describe it. What you do is choose the AAC + AC3 Codec option with leaves you with only that mixdown available in audio, HandBrake automagically creates two tracks of the described content.

It kind of confusing to explain unless you are looking at the macgui. As well, frankly I dont know if this is how its implemented in the WinGui. sr55 is the WinGui dev, so maybe he can correct me on his implementation.

Ok, thanks for taking the time to try and answer my question.
Still not 100 % sure yet... this is how I understand it:

Track 1:
- will be activated by default
- if you select for example (AC3) 5.1 as input for Track 1 you can select in Track 1 Mix to what HB should convert it (for example stereo). The resulting file will then play the stereo track by default (and no 5.1 track in the final file this way)

Track 2:
- you can enter another (or the same) track to be added as well.
- you need to select it in your player to be able to hear it

Now where I get confused...
- When AppleTV is selected Track 1 Mix is greyed out. What should I select (for track 1 & 2) if I want a (AC3) 5.1 track (active by default) and an AAC 2.0 track as a second?
- another, question: what WinXP software gives me a quick inside look at what's inside an m4v-file (esp. audio tracks)?

I just found out that in the DVD's I just converted, the 5.1 audio is not in the resulting file... grmmbbl

... sr55 can you help me out? How is audio (AC3/AAC) supposed to be setup in the AppleTV preset in order to get one 5.1 AC3 track and one 2.0 AAC track ?

I tried all possible options I could now, with a small sample file, but keep getting '2 channels' on all audio tracks (both AAC and AC3) in MediaInfo
I'm expecting to find a 6 channel AC3 track though in MediaInfo... is this correct??

Select AAC+AC3 in the audio encoder + a 5.1 AC3 track on track 1. Thats all you need to do.

Just to be sure we're looking at the right things... did you check this post: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php ... d=a#p27383 (in this thread you're in right now): MediaInfo tells me '2 channels' AC3... can you confirm this is 2 channels as in 'stereo', 2.0?

That's what I'm trying to figure out, whether this is a ripping issue or a MediaInfo issue. The rip log will go a long way towards determining that.

Well, it seems to me its two channels, whether its a dpl mix or just regular stero, who knows. But it doesnt look like the AC3 was passed thru in 5.1.

What doe QuickTime say when you open it up in "Movie Properties" ?

Sorry, took a second to get this.

Quicktime Pro gives 2 audio tracks:
1) Name: Stereo, Channels: Stereo (L R), Format: AAC
2) Name: Surround, Channels: Stereo (L R), Format: AC3

Funny, Gspot only finds 1 track, but reports it to be AC3 48000Hz 384 kb/s tot , 6 chnls (3/2 .1)

Edit: Problem wasn't a problem. But solved anyway by jbrjake: "....AC3 pass-thru is 2-channel. AC3 is piped as 16-bit PCM. It's a stereo stream of data decoded by a receiver into 5.1 channels of sound."
