Trying to rip old homebrew DVD fails

Post by LordOfMostlyMe »

Description of problem or question:
I've been ripping a lot of these homebrew DVDs and have had no problems so far. The DVD in question is slightly scratched but I am able to play it all the way through with some skips on both PC and my DVD player, HandBrake refuses to rip it fully having failed multiple times at different percentages. I have cleaned the disk to no results.

Assuming it's the disk damage that is preventing HandBrake from encoding it, could I force the program to skip the damaged sections as my DVD player seems to do?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.4.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10 Pro 20H2

Re: Trying to rip old homebrew DVD fails

Post by Woodstock »

Programs intended to encode video aren't going to be very tolerant of missing data. With handbrake, it is using a library to read the disk using a library that will say the file has ended when it hits the error.

There are ways to copy the disk and replacing the unreadable parts with zeros (the dd program under Unix-like systems), but the zeros will cause problems with decoding as well.
