50% (!!!) larger files generated w/ version 141?

Post by abphbrk »

Description of problem or question:

50% (!!!) larger files generated w/ version 1.4.1? Why?

I've been using v 1.3.3 previously. Ran a test by first recoding an h.264 1080p mkv file with 1.3.3 (using the same exact settings, h.265 Fast 720p) on two separate Win10 PCs as a control. Both PCs generated identical-sized files (521,620 KB).

I then upgraded to v 1.4.1 on one PC and ran the same file through the same exact settings (yes, EXACT SAME), this time the output file was 50% larger (718,855 KB). Upgraded the other PC to 1.4.1 as well and ran the exact same thing. Again the output file, while identical-sized, is still 50% larger than with 1.3.3 - why???

This negates any point in recoding for smaller file size.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Select file, use any recode settings, check output

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.4.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10

You are using different encoder presets, thus the different size.

I'm using the exact same presets and settings on both versions - Fast 720p, no filters, audio passthru, framerate same as source, etc etc etc

Ran multiple tests to make sure the settings are identical between the two versions.

I get that that's what the log states, however, why would there (presumably) be no visible difference on what the UI shows for quality? Both use the dropdown option provided by default for "Fast 720p" - so why would 1.3 log show "preset: balanced" and 1.4 show "preset: speed"?

Both are also set to Quality / Constant / 21 in the video tab.

One presumes therefore that the only way to get back down to a similar/same output size with 1.4 is to actually *lower* the quality of the recode. That doesn't seem like that's how it should work.

On the video tab is there an “Encoder Preset” option?

Yes, and both (1.3.3 & 1.4.1) have the slider at the default middle pip-mark.

Unfortunately I don’t have a system to test this on.

Understood, and appreciate the input.

But this is also why I've already done multiple tests on 4 different PCs (using both 1.3.3 and 1.4.1 on each) and arrive at the same inescapable fact that (again, presumably) identical preset settings on either version always result in a MUCH larger output file for 1.4.1. Again, unless one actively *lowers* the quality on 1.4.1.

Hence my frustration.

Also, the lack of any documentation that even hints at this (and why it behaves this way) contributes to the frustration.

The logs tell us what’s happening.

The presets may have changed between versions as they can do.

A dev can probably tell us whether this is correct behaviour or a bug.

Exactly what I'm hoping for (expected behavior [and why] vs bug)!

First, your not using the Fast 720P preset as it does not use these settings. You've modified it substantially so it's not the same thing anymore.

The logs confirm that you are not using the same settings. So difference in filesize is 100% correct and expected based on the settings used. Rollin is correct. The encoder preset is defiantly not the same.

The 2nd major difference in settings is that you are using low-power mode (on by default in 1.4). This can dramatically change how the encoder behaves and will likely bias towards speed over filesize without other adjustments. You'll need to disable this in preferences -> video if you don't want it.

I had a look at the UI and it looks like it's behaving correctly. I'm not seeing any issues of one thing being selected and it doing something else. I'd need screenshots and exact step by step if you think otherwise so I can understand what your doing.

If you didn't set the encoder preset, it could well be defaulting to speed rather than balanced. There is nothing wrong with this but if you want settings closer to what you had before, you'll need to manually set this to balanced.

Thanks for the input, but as stated, anything the log incorporates as "different" is entirely due to the software. In other words, given selecting/applying the EXACT SAME SETTINGS TO BOTH VERSIONS PER WHAT'S AVAILABLE ON THE UI:

Preset selected = Fast 720p / MKV output
Dimensions: no changes to default
Filters: everything set to "Off"
Video: H.265 iQSV / FPS same as source / CQ 21 / Encoder Preset default mid-pip
Audio: codec passthru

This results in larger 1.4.1 files. I'm not questioning that the logs show differences between the two. What I'm questioning is (given that all the user-available UI settings/options are set to the EXACT SAME SETTINGS) why differences are present.

As stated multiple times as well - multiple side-by-side verifications have been done, so no, I'm not fat-fingering anything or mis-setting something different on one version versus another.

Given duplicate settings, there should *not* be any differences. Again, if differences are being applied "under the hood" then this needs explaining as to why.

also, rather than me being a factor, you can easily try this yourself:

1. on any given hardware, install 1.3.3
2. use whatever source file you want
3. select any preset without altering any options (use them as is)
4. keep resulting output file for reference
5. uninstall 1.3.3
6. install 1.4.1
7. use the same source file as with 2
8. use the same default preset settings as with the last run on 1.3.3
9. compare output file sizes
10. find 1.4.1 output size > 1.3.3 output size

I've pretty much done the above multiple times on 4 different PCs.

s55 already explained what changed in the QSV encoder you are using.

You don't have all the settings the same, as s55 helpfully pointed out:

Are all the settings where you expect to find them? Perhaps not, given the angry spaghetti GUI. But once you get the settings the same, the output will be about the same too.
