Is Handbrake doing 2-pass encoding even if not selected?

Post by MidnightWatcher »

Just curious. I'm using Handbrake 1.4.1 on Windows 10 Pro 21H1 and am encoding a 4K UHD rip with the Constant Quality set to 15.5 RF. Why is the status at the bottom stating "Encoding: Pass 2 of 2" when I don't have 2-Pass Encoding selected? Is 2-pass encoding enabled by default for 4K HDR material and I simply didn't notice it before?

Video Settings:

Format: MKV
Passthru Common Metadata: Enabled
Video Encoder: H.265 10-bit
Framerate: Same as source
Constant Framerate selected
Constant Quality: 15.5
Encoder Preset: Medium

There are reasons to do a first pass, even if you're not doing it for bit rate optimization. Are you using Foreign Audio Search for a subtitle track? That forces a first pass, looking for the proper subtitle track.

(this is where those pesky required encode logs come in SO handy in providing answers!)

Ah yes, I left the foreign audio search enabled. Interesting!

In the future, there may be other features added that trigger a "first pass" through the file, but it's currently just bit rate and FAS.
