How to access and go to chapter points

Post by Danny Lawrence »

This is my first experience using Handbrake. I installed it because someone suggested it might include a way to copy chapter points from DVDs into video files to be viewed via hard drives on TVs. My first attempt to do so appeared to go smoothly (although the activity log did throw up problems (see below).
I imported an .iso file of a DVD (of a home movie) and found the five chapter points were correctly identified and labelled as numbers. I changed the labels to those used on the DVD before encoding the file as an mp4 file using the default preset. The encoding process completed without any error messages. I then plugged the external hard drive to the USB port on my DVD player (my normal practice). The new file appeared on screen alongside the existing files and could be played in the same way. However, I have no idea if it contans chapter points or how to access them. I tried using the skip function on the DVD player remote but it had no effect. Have I overestimated Handbrake's capabilities or failed to do something obvious. I would welcome any advice, including, if necessary, being told I am hoping for the impossible.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Handbrake version 1.4.1

Window 10

The encode log will tell us more than the scan log, because the scan log shows that the DVD has chapters, but what type file you asked handbrake to output affects how they're's inserted in the file, and whether or not your TV will find them.

Thank you for responding so quckly rollin-eng and Woodstock. How do I find the encode log? I'm sorry if this should be obvious to me.

Thanks rollin_eng! and Woodstock I've done the job again and attached the activity and encode logs below. Many thanks for taking an interest in my issue.
If I might go back to my starting point, I'm transferring my substantial, lovingly edited, home movie collection from DVD to external hard drive and hoped to be able to access the chapter points in some way, even if not nearly as conveniently as on the DVDs.
Using Handbrake, the chapters created on the video file can be accessed via the skip feature in the VLC app on my PC. However, when the same external hard drive is plugged into my Panasonic DMP-BDT370 Blue Ray Player, although the video plays normally, using its skip funtion generates the error 'this operation is not available'. Do you know if that will be my experience with all TV media players or TVs? If the chapter points might be accessible through a different TV media player or TV I would be happy to invest accordingly.
For the record, I can also play the video on the hard drive directly through the USB port on my Samsung TV but its remote does not have a skip function, only a fast forward facility.

Re: How to access and go to chapter points

Post by Woodstock »

Key information:

Code: Select all

"ChapterMarkers": true,
"AlignAVStart": true,
"File": "E:\\Handbrake files\\Alaska Cruise 1-1.mp4",
MP4 files have limitations that other containers do not. One of them is a lack of chapter marker support in the standard. MKV files have "real" XML chapter tracks, but I would guess your TV doesn't support MKV files on its own.

There is, however, a "mostly universal" work-around for this limitation; using a special "subtitle track" to contain the chapter markers. "Mostly universal" means that not all players support it, and may display the chapter marker track as a subtitle, usually "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc.

My experience is limited on TV brands, but I have yet to see one support this form of chapter marker. VLC and Kodi support it, but the "inside smarts" of smart TVs aren't very.

I'd recommend testing the file with VLC or Kodi, and see if they show the chapter markers. The log says they're there; it's the TV that says "no they aren't".

Thanks for that clarification and advice. My media player does support MKV files and so I returned to Handbrake and created an MKV rather than mp4 file. Again the chapter points are accessible in VLC but not via the media player. I get the same 'this operation is not available' error message.
Looks like my last chance is to try your subtitle track work-around - but not today!

The subtitle track work-around was already being done in the encode you sent the log for. Your player didn't see it... which is unfortunate.

Ah well. Thank you so much for helping. I may not have succeeded but I understand why I have failed!

Hardware Media player capable of skipping to chapter points

Post by Danny Lawrence »

I've established that chapter points can be saved to MKV files and accessed easily on a PC. However, I have yet to find any kind of hardware media player that can do the same. Pamasonic, for example, tell me that their machines cannot because the full codec has not been implemented. You can fast forward but not skip. Does anyone know of any hardware media player, current or discontinued, with this capacity? It seems to be not an unreasonable feature to expect given the elaborate menu structures possible on DVDs, and the ability to at least skip to chapter points on PCs. If manufacturers provide the means to play video files on hard drives through their media players, surely it was would be sensible to also implement the video codec sufficiently comprehensively to make life easier for consumers, and give the skip button on their remotes something to do when playing back video files.
