How to set the format to save to as MP4?

Post by KenK »

Description of problem or question:

How to set the format to save to as MP4? The output "Save as..." defaults to m4v. There seems no obvious way to change it to mp4.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Load in an existing MP4 (which I want to convert to MP4 specs required by Thinkific)

Notice that the "Save as " field defaults to a fiule name wioth a m4v extension.

Look unsuccessfully for a way to save it as MP4

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.4.1 (2021081500)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

There is an option in the preferences.

I've wondered this for years, too. M4V seems to be a peculiar default.

I see what Ritsuka is referring to:

In the bottom left corner of the initial Handbrake window is a small active link 'Preferences'.
Choosing that link reveals a window of settings. In the 'Output files' item on the left there is a reference to 'MP4 File Extension'.
By choosing 'Always use MP4' in the dropdown box, I expect all output files will behave with that dictate.

M4V was necessary for older Apple devices if you wanted to enable certain features. Some other software would have issues with MP4 files if they had extensions other than M4V, and some ignored files that didn't use MPG.

Device compatibility can be a real pain - I had an early Samsung "smart" TV that would only play MKV files it they had the extension AVI.
