Do the above.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.4.0.

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10 19043.1110

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)
All the logs are old, nothing from today.

Ticket about this on github

You have to find the DESKTOP runtime, but Microsoft leads you to the non-desktop version.

We've tried using the Microsoft .NET Runtime 5.0.8 but that gives you the same message.

It works though when using the Microsoft .NET SDK 5.0.205: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/5.0

I suggest you add to the release notes that this version of the software was built using a prerelease version of .Net and that users that don't love spending time downloading and installing system software manually may want to wait until version 5 of .Net has been rolled out to them using Windows Update.

You need the Desktop Runtime.

Try the Desktop Runtime.

.NET 5 is not pre-release and is fully supported by Microsoft. Given the regular release cadence, I'm not expecting them to push this out. I believe they plan or are doing patching updates via Windows Update but I've not seen fresh installs of it.

Finally, As rolling said: Make sure you download and Install the Desktop Runtime Version.

Sorry, we can't do anything about the sub-optimal message and page design as that's controlled by Microsoft.

Solved most of my question using the destopruntime but I would like to know if I can/should replace to files that I was asked /suggested I remove from the user>NAME>app data>roaming in order to later install??
Many thanks

Are there some versions of Win 10 Pro that cannot install .net 5? I have a Thinkpad P71 with an Intel Xeon mobile E3-1535 CPU that has been running handbrake V1.33 constantly for months. I cannot install the desktopruntime version of .net 5, so I cannot run Handbrake 1.40. Do I have any options?

I have looked at the .net 5 installation log and I have Window v6.1 (Build 7600: Service Pack 0) and the .net 5 runtime needs windows > 6.1 OR windows 6.1 AND servicePackLevel of 1. Is there any option other than installing Handbrake 1.4 on a new Windows 10 computer? :(

Microsoft .NET SDK 5.0.205 works for me. I can't believe that they don't test these things before they publish instructions that don't work. I've wasted a lot of time on this!

Thanks SO MUCH carrc99!!! The dotnet-sdk-5.0.205-Win-x64 version also installed for me on my laptop where the desktopruntime version of .net5 failed to install. I'm up and running Handbrake 1.40 now!

I too was having this issue after installing/updating Handbrake 1.4.0 today (30Jul2021) on my Windows 10 (21H1). I first check to see of any of any Windows Updates & optional updates. I had a few cumulatives and went ahead and updated those, even restarted just because. But was still getting the same message...I tried the site I was directed to ("Download .NET 5.0 Runtime" the main title, under Windows, Run console apps, download installed X64, didn't work. Then x86, still didn't work. Found this forum and tried "rollin_eng" link (5th post down) windowsdeskttop-runtime...:

https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/d ... -installer

And this worked for me...just sharing my process/experience. I'm sure the other one works also, just don't know the whys'...

Thanks rollin_eng
