Issue with HandBrake

Post by radioguy »

Description of problem or question:

Hi All
I have recently started using HandBrake and it really does a perfect job. However, I have one minor issue with the program. Apparently, the conversion only works with ONE file at a time. I was wondering if it could be changed, modified, updated…whatever…to let it modify more than one file at a time.

I have found that by simply “bringing up” the program again I can accomplish this but that’s obviously a crazy way to do it. I know the files can be lined up in the queue…BUT…they are modified individually, not simultaneously. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Simply try to modify two files SIMULTANEOUSLY

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.3.3 (2020061300)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 7

Re: Issue with HandBrake

I assume your talking about configuring jobs before adding them to the queue.

HandBrake has a preset system. If one of the built-in presets doesn't match your needs, you can create a custom preset. That way, you select the preset you've created, then add all the jobs you need to the queue.

The flow is configure -> Add. Not Add -> Configure.

If the right preset is selected, it's as simple as selecting source/title. Adding to the queue and pressing start.

OP wants to run two encodes at the same time, not a serial queue.

Yeh, The wording was bit unclear so I made an assumption. "they are modified individually," (as if to say, using the job edit functionality)

Regardless, if he did mean run multiple encodes at the same time, that I3 CPU is simply to weak for running multiple jobs and actually getting nay benefit from it. 1 job will max it out.

Hi
Thanks for the replies. Sorry if my explanation was apparently misworded a bit. Yes....what I would like to do is run multiple encodes at the same time. As far as any strain on the processor......it works with several other programs that are readily available, but I happen to like HandBrake.....and NOT just because it's free.....LOL. There is a program called Prism, for example, that will encode multiple files, and it also works perfectly.

One thing I have done is bring up one instance of HandBrake, start it (encoding a file) bring it up again, and have that one encode a different file (or files in the queue) and it all works perfectly......BUT.......that is not really the ideal method......it's just something that "works".

There is no point in doing this. If 1 instance of HandBrake uses 100% of CPU time, then processing sequentially is the best option. Doing 2 encodes, will simply lead to 2 encodes taking twice as long as if they were run sequentially.

You need a high end CPU in order to be able to do this and yours just won't see any benefit.

Your CPU has 4 cores. Each handbrake encode will take up 8-12 threads. Any time the threads needed exceeds the number of physical cores, the CPU has the added overhead of context switching to handle those threads.

Just because something "works perfectly" does not mean it works well. A 2-core Atom processor will do encodes, too, with similar performance to doing 2 encodes on a 4-core processor.

Thanks for the replies.....I see where this is headed. The processor just won't cut it......the WAY I want it to. :(
