Constant crashing with 4k video

Post by brocktheman »

Description of problem or question:

Fwiw I use geforce experience to record my gameplay, and I just started recording in 4k and I've gotten back into using handbrake again, and to my surprise I get nothing but crashing and/or errors. I never had this issue with 1440p files. I've tried using a custom preset and the "vimeo 4k" preset to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Nightly and 1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10 Pro, 19041.867

Define "crash" in this context. Machine stops working? Program closed by operating system? System slows to a crawl? Rude noises emanate from the case as smoke rises?

The log just stops, which normally would mean that the operating system detected a problem. That would create a system log entry that you could find in the Event Viewer. But it could also mean that your system reached a temperature limit, and the motherboard shut it down.

No, it doesn't; HB is throwing a code for a worker crash.

Code: Select all

It was crashing at first, crashing to desktop so to speak, but then it stopped. It now just stops encoding and at the bottom says there were "cancellations/error." I should have better clarified that.

OK, as pointed out by mduell, this is part of something new in the nightly, the ability to submit multiple simultaneous jobs. I would suggest disabling that feature, and try the encodes again. If it still crashes, you should get better error messages, at least.

There's a similar discussion on github: https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/3498

How do I disable that feature?

Per s55 in the linked github issue, it's called "process isolation" in preferences. It defaults to "on" when you install the nightly, but changing it will "stick" as you update.

It allows the queue to start multiple encodes if there is processing capability available.

Ok thanks, idk how i missed that lol. But I tried that amongst different presets and now it's crashing to desktop after around i'm guessing 20-30mins. I really don't understand this problem.

Are there Event Viewer entries for when it crashes to the desktop?

I assume you've restarted Windows during this adventure, to make sure there isn't any code from a previous run sticking around in memory.

Yeah, I've restarted and not going to lie, I've never used event viewer but when I checked nothing seems to show up for handbrake. But I think I found a solution after trying other presets and even using an older version that was actually working albeit on another pc/laptop. It seems like handbrake doesn't like to work with an overclocked cpu. I haven't had any issues so far but I'm making the most progress since I've started using handbrake again on this newer computer.

Is there a workaround for this other than resetting it back to default clock settings?

Handbrake makes for a good stress test for overclocking - it WILL trip things that other stress tests do not. It uses a much wider number of instructions than simply "heat it up until it shuts down" tests, as well as a lot more memory manipulation.

It MIGHT be worthwhile to swap your high/low memory chips and see if the behavior changes. Intermittent memory cells are VERY hard to isolate, and dynamic memory mapping can make marginal cells appear and disappear from a program's data space.

Handbrake is just fine with overclocked CPUs/RAM if they are in fact stable overclocks for the whole system (including PSU, motherboard power delivery, etc).

Not all CPUs/RAM overclocks are actually stable for highly optimized code like the libraries HB uses for encoding.
