Occasional Sub-Titles

Post by Digital Hunter »

English sub-titles in English movies...
I've got a couple movies (Allied & A Good Day to Die Hard for starters) that are in English...but there ARE sections in the movie where people are speaking foreign languages and those sections are sub-titled in the film when playing the DVD.

I've set the English sub-title in Handbrake and EVERYTHING is sub-titled.

I'm kinda new to this...so some of the terminology is new to me...I might be searching with the wrong term to look for it here...

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows10 20H2

Your source is an MP4 at 1920x1080, which suggests a Bluray source. BD uses PGS-type subtitles, which are not compatible with MP4 files.

There does not seem to be a subtitle track within it the MP4, so handbrake had nothing to work with. That would indicate that the subtitles were already written to the video.

There are a lot of films that embed their "foreign audio" like that.

I used Any DVD HD to rip the disc to the drive, then used HandBrake to make the MP4...

It was one of the early ones I did...now I'm just using HandBrake and letting AnyDVD HD remove the protections...

But it's the same question...how does one get "some" sub-titles and not "all" of the film getting sub-titled?

The strange thing is...I just now did Atomic Blonde...didn't do anything different than any other encode, and the sub-titles are there when the Russians are speaking.

I'd really like to figure this out so I can make sure it isn't hit-or-miss...at over an hour (or 1 1/2 hours) to encode each time, its wasted effort.

Subtitle schemes on disks are wild and crazy. Well over 95% of what I rip and run through handbrake is dubbed/subtitled, so I have seen most of them, but not all.

Examples: The Longest Day has the subtitles for some foreign audio (French, German, Italian, others) embedded in the video. Omitted are a lot of incidental speech, that does not affect understanding. The Bluray and DVD copies I have of this film do not have subtitle tracks.

Avatar (the space movie, not the anime series) has subtitle tracks where some individual subtitles are marked as "forced", and you use the "forced only" checkbox in handbrake to get them saved off to their own track.

Some anime series have one track, with all subtitles, for use with dubbed audio. Some will use the "forced" flag within that track (very rare). Others have separate tracks for non-dubbed stuff like signs, vs. "everything".

When ripping, different programs do different things. I use MakeMKV, and have it rip all audio tracks and subtitle tracks into an MKV file, which I then hand off to handbrake, AFTER checking it with VLC to see which tracks have the things I want. MKV files can handle a lot of audio and subtitle tracks that are illegal in MP4, so if AnyDVD is making an MP4 for you, it's doing "other things" with the source. You might want to check your options.

Making "switchable subtitles" that can be disabled in an MP4 limits your choices. With Bluray sources, you have almost none, without a lot of other work.

Avoiding the long encodes is possible by only encoding "enough" to see where the subtitles are. There are actually sites out there that tell you where the first subtitle should appear in various movies.

Woodstock...

I've stopped using AnyDVD HD for ripping the discs directly. It's ONLY in place to clear the protections on the BlueRay discs and then HandBrake takes it from there...reading directly from the disc and encoding it to MP4.

I've got well over 1,300 discs to transfer to my NAS...I've got about 200 done now. I've got a ton of work ahead of me...

Understand the "lots of disks to go". When I decided to buy all the Star Trek series at once, I had 185 disks to rip. I did about 20 per day over a week with MakeMKV, staying well ahead of handbrake, which took over two weeks to get through them. I prefer to get the "waiting on me" part over as soon as possible.

My only regret is I didn't start on this sooner...with being quarantined since March I've certainly had the time.

I typically "work" off my laptop...so the ASUS workstation I built a few years back (with SATA RAID) is what I use to rip the discs...and once it gets cooking ALL the fans come on full speed and sounds like a jet taking off...so I use Remote Desktop to keep an eye on things and let me know when the next disc needs to be loaded up.

I couldn't stay in there and get anything done while it's encoding...I need to double the volume setting on the TV in the bedroom just to hear it over the computer.

I've done 35 movies since the beginning of last week letting HandBrake do it all...it seemed to be faster when I had everything ripped to the hard drive, then I could queue up 8-10 movies and let it go all day and it would have them finished by 9 or 10 at night. But I'm ripping them @ a video setting of 19 because all our TV's are 4K in the house and I want the films to look just as good off the NAS as they do off the DVD's. They are averaging about 10GB per film...not too worried as my NAS (currently) has 12TB of storage and I've still got 2 slots open on it expand the RAID.

I've got more RAM on the way so I can use the Hybrid Desktop feature and use the HDMI to directly feed the projector or the TV in the living room. Everyplace else has a network link to it.

On "A Good Day To Die Hard" I found that even though there was no "subtitle" that came up...if I added a "subtitle" and then chose "5 English" as "Forced Only" and "Burn In" it gets ONLY the Russian language sub-titled on the rip...

Now...I have to play with "Allied" and see if I can get the French language (only) to come up in the sub-titles...

WHY do they make this [Censored] so hard? :x

For "Allied" it was different...I had to try all permutations to get it to work, but finally it was eliminating all but the [2 English] audio sound tracks and in the sub-title tab it was "Forced Only" and "Burn In" selected with 1 English [PGS] selected in the pull-down for "Foreign Audio Scan" that got me there.

Now that I know what to look for...it just takes some experimentation to make it happen. The Preview feature is a lifesaver...select a short 30-second clip where you know there is a foreign language spoken...play it and then change settings until it gives you the sub-titles. Then move the Preview slider to another section of the film where there is English spoken and do another preview and see if it's NOT giving you sub-titles when they speak English.

I wanted to give everyone else a rundown on what I found out...since I'm not the first, and certainly won't be the last, to have this problem pop up.

BTW: If you eliminate all but the [6 English] soundtrack it gives you the descriptive audio...along with the sub-titles (in English)
