Handbrake is making my video files much larger not smaller

Post by rkstudio »

Description of problem or question:
I am trying to reduce the file size with videos shot from my phone. I am using the resolution of 1280 x 720, .mp4. After following advise from some videos I saw on Youtube, the videos I worked on got WAY larger when I tried to reduce them in Handbrake. I followed instructions to a tee but it has an opposite effect from what I'm trying to do.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

I don't know of any steps to reduce the problem.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10

First suggestion - forget what you saw on YouTube. If you aren't trying to convert game footage to post at highest resolution on YT, the people who post such videos aren't working on your issue.

Video "growing" is often because you're trying to record more detail than the source had. Your source is already pretty heavily compressed, so a CRF setting of 20 is ambitious. It will likely "faithfully reproduce" the existing compression artifacts, which means a larger file.

Did you try any of the supplied presets before wandering off to YouTube?

Also try a slower encoder preset, that might help reduce size too.
