Can't convert MKV to MP4 (directly)

Post by eemartin »

Description of problem or question:

Simple stuff. I want to convert an MKV file to an MP4 file. I take the MKV file as source, ensure that in the summary tab "Format:" is MP4, and "Web optimised" is ticked. I set the destination as something.mp4 and tell it to "Start Encode". The resulting file has the MP4 extension, but in the file properties I see that it is actually M4V. I *can* then use the M4V file and convert it to MP4, but then it's a two-stage conversion. Why can't I do the job in one step?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10, regularly updated

M4V is an MP4 file that has had the file extension "M4V" put on it. If you have software that is still unable to work with it, you can rename it.

You can also set handbrake to prefer the MP4 file extension in Tools->Preferences.

My TV is not playing MKV so that i can pause or fast forward it. The easy way is just to rename the mkv to Mp4 and it works. MKV ist just a container format wthin are the real files. With mediainfo (an app to download) you can find out what realy is the format of the video and audio files. M4V ist a file that ist encodet with the MP4 codec but it ist only the Video File without audio. Rename it to mp4 ending it will play but only Video.
