Duration of dvd substantially reduced once encoded

Post by Gogsi »

Description of problem or question:
To make an mp4 file
I launched Handbrake
The duration displayed for the dvd on Handbrake was 01:54:00
Proceeded with the encoding and was surprised to see a file of only 210mb
Upon playing this file, I found that it was only 00:12:00

Tried the same procedure several times with same result.

Uninstalled Handbrake
Reinstalled
Rebooted laptop.
Try the exact same process, but same result

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.3 (2020061300)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 64bit

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find this very elusive file. The directions to locate this are a bit too complicated for my addled brain (due to extreme fatigue. Maybe if there was a simple version of how to find it I could adhere to your rquest.

Activity Logs on Windows

On Windows, logs are stored at the following locations, where Username is your user name:
-> C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\HandBrake\logs on Windows 7, 8, and 10
Doesn't sound this complicated.

If you are using the GUI, you can also have handbrake open the activity log folder for you, by clicking on "Activity log", then "Open Log Directory".

Guessing that you're trying to force handbrake to rip the DVD (it isn't a disk ripper), and errors were encountered.

Because you are less than helpful...

As Strider and Woodstock said it should be fairly easy, if you still have issues let us know.

Yahoo, I've actually found the Activity log.
Should I just paste it here?

There are a number of errors that seem to be caused by the DVD being encrypted and you haven't installed the 3rd-party add-on to undo that encryption. There may also be read errors (drive can't get the data to begin with), but that's hard to tell from this log.

Handbrake isn't intended for ripping, so it doesn't try hard to deal with disk errors. Even if you had installed the third-party library all the websites say you should install, it doesn't deal well with errors on the disk. That's why that combination has been "not recommended" for almost a dozen years.

Suggest you use one of the various ripping programs, such as MakeMKV, to get the data off the disk, then encode it from there. These programs will remove the encryption, and usually will try a lot harder to read the disk... or, at least, report on errors better.

Hi Woodstock and thanks so much for taking the time to give me such a detailed report.
That's very odd about the encryption as i created the dvd many years ago myself so I definitely didn't consciously do any encryption and had no reason to as it was something personal.
Well, this has become a far more tedious job than I had imagined.
I'll definitely give your suggestion a try. Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards

If it's a self-created DVD, encryption is, as you say, unlikely. But the read issues are still there. Depending on how the disk was authored, there can be issues with whether or not the directory was properly written.

Assuming this is a DVD-R disk (not pressed), some BD drives have problems reading those, even when they're pristine. I have three copies of one "burn as needed" commercial title that I can only read in a real DVD drive, not a combo unit. They all fail at exactly the same point using MakeMKV, until I got out my original "portable" DVD drive from 2003. It read them the first time.

If cleaning the disk doesn't help, see if you can locate a computer with a CD/DVD drive to copy an image to disk (or USB flash drive).

Wow Woodstock you have been ever so helpful !
Thanks very much .
Will try as you say later on when I'll hopefully feel a bit stronger.
Ever so grateful,

If the disc, rather than being dirty, was not closed properly or has book-type issues (unlikely in this decade), you can try ISOBuster (free) to pull the titles from the mud.
