Re-Encode size LARGE

Post by frodawgg »

Description of problem or question:
I was re-encoding a 30ish gb MKV because it didn't meet specifications to be burned to Blu-ray, but after a day of re-encoding, the resulting MKV was 77gb--more than double its original size! Even if it now meets the specifications, discs aren't that big!

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

0.10.5.0

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 7

Might that have something to do with it?
Try a stock High Profile setting first, and try not to futz.

Does that read to disable the high profile? I'll try that.

I'm new to this...what does futz mean?

Thanks

Someone on another support forum said that I need to change the specifications to meet Blu-ray standards and posted this link: https://sites.google.com/site/x264bluray/home/1080i-p

This means next to nothing to me; is this something I need to look into?

"Futz" means "screw around". Just try the "HQ 1080p30 Surround" profile, with no modifications.

By the way, the link you posted tells you how to use the x264 program, not handbrake.

Yes, that sounds like a great place to start.
Handbrake presets do what they say, and get it right every time!
Stay off other internet sites, pick a preset AS-IS, and see what you get.
Futzing is Futile.

BTW, the title of the page you linked is "Authoring a professional Blu-ray Disc with x264"
You are not doing that, Handbrake does not do that, and x264 has never worked for me for BluRay authoring, in my fifteen years of commercial production experience.
Typical gutter hype.

Also try upgrading to the latest version.

If you are trying to generate a blu ray compatible video, HB is probably not the best tool.

X264 is perfectly capable of outputting Blu Ray compatible video if you use the correct settings.

In all this, nobody bothered to mention that the file size problem is due to his choice of RF. RF 0 means encode losslessly. The encoder it attempting to preserve every last detail and that requires lots of bits.

So, don't "futz" with the RF. If you require BD spec compatibility, you will have to futz with some other settings. But I'm wondering, do you really need BD spec compatibility? Are you feeding the output of HandBrake to a BD authoring tool, or are you just writing an mkv to a BD-ROM?

He pointed out the error without giving an explanation :)

Anyway, this should explain how to deal with the quality slider:

I'm also going senile, I thought we had a FAQ that covered RF 0 somewhere, but cannot find it anymore.

Re: Re-Encode size LARGE

Thank you for all your replies. I have gone ahead and updated. I understand the rf setting. Being less than a novice, I just assumed to keep the best quality I needed to go lossless, but it made sense that it would increase the file size. After reading the settings, it says that 20-24 is ideal for HD files.

To answer JohnAStebbins, I am simply trying to put the movie on a Blu-ray because that is my preferred method of viewing. Long story short, the fps was not compatible with either tsmuxer or multiavchd (this is not my project, but from someone else), so I was told on another forum to reencode.

I've done one pass, and while the size was acceptable, it didn't work in either of those programs; my output was MPEG4/H264. One of those settings was not compatible, as tsmuxer accepts MP4 but this was M4V (I don't know if that makes a difference) and H264MVC but this was AVC (once again, don't know if that matters). I'm going to try one more pass to MKV/MPEG2 (both which are supposedly supported), before I give up completely; I don't know how many more times I can have my computer monopolized for a day at a time.

Thanks again for all the pointers.

Sorry to make the distinction again, but it comes up periodically. One can drop just about anything Handbrake can render onto a BluRay blank and it will play, as a data file.

Authoring a BluRay, with interactive titles, menus, chapters, angles, and multiple audios and features, is a different matter. My DVDA Pro authoring software will always do a major recode with anything x264, although it appears to meet spec. I once heard someone say they had x264 working in TMPGENC Author without recoding, but not since, nor do I own that software.

I don't care about menus (although I've done them before), but I've burned multiple movies with chapters and different audio tracks through tsmuxer and multiavchd.

I may be mistaken, but I don't believe they were data files. Once again, I may be wrong, and probably am 🤣

Yes, there is a distinction. You will not author a BluRay without using BluRay authoring software, which can be as simple as a single movie or slideshow (BDAV), or as complex as commercial movie discs (BDMV). An mp4/mkv file burned to a BluRay blank is an example of a data disc.

Compliant authoring is very picky about source -- lest it require a major recode, and no, mp4/m4v chapters are not BluRay chapters, nor are multiple mp4 audio tracks the same as BluRay secondary audio tracks (language, commentary, karaoke, etc.) A playable BluRay ISO on a hard drive is also possible.

Adobe Encore, DVDA, TMGENC, and Scenarist are popular professional authoring solutions, There are many more, including freeware.
TSMuxr is not authoring software. Good luck.

In all this, nobody bothered to mention that the file size problem is due to his choice of RF. RF 0 means encode losslessly.
He pointed out the error without giving an explanation :)

The problem is that some people DO read minds, but they're confused by all the voices in our heads arguing.

Psychiatrists would like to remind people that it's OK to speak to your appliances during this confinement situation. You only need to call them if your appliances start talking back to you :D

Psychiatrists also remind us that one definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over, and expecting different results.
Kind of defines my forum history.
