Stretched video after conversion

Post by Paultx »

Description of problem or question:
I copied a BD to my PC with DVDFab then ran HandBrake to convert it, because the latter is easiest for me to set and use.

The problem is that, when I play the HandBrake-converted video on my TV, via external HD and BD player, it looks out of proportion (width/height). That is, the image shown in the converted video look stretched.

To test, I copied the folder with that BD's content to the same external HD and, when I play it that same way, its proportions are correct.

I don't know if its due to the the copying process (DVDFab), the conversion process (HandBrake), or to the BD player.

Please, help me figure it out and fix it, if possible. TIA.

None of your images work.

Is it fine when you play it on your computer with VLC?

Sounds like a broken player.

Or he has his TV set to "stretch" mode in picture settings.

External images do not work on this forum, period.

It's fine when I play it with VLC, MPCHC, FormatPlayer, and even the IrfanView Multimedia Player.

Nope. My TV is set to the "Original" mode, which displays most 16:9 and 4:3 videos without stretching.

It's a shame I can't show all that with images here. But I think the point is that the BD folder content plays OK and its converted video doesn't. So, as to the possibly "broken player", I wonder why it plays BDs and BD folders contentand other converted videos correctly, but not this one in particular.

I was thinking it might have to do with the original movie proportions, that Techniscope spec that is written on the case. BTW, when I play the converted video with MPCHC its borders go beyond the monitor's area (horizontally). But I'm not sure, I'm a newbie in this subject.

BD players are designed to play primarily BD content. Anything that doesn't conform to the BD spec does not fall into it's primary function and I'm sure the manufacturers provide no guarantee it will work. BD content is very restricted in what is allowed. Only specific framerates, resolutions, aspect ratios, codec parameters, etc. are permitted. So you might try disabling autocrop in HandBrake since this changes the resolution and aspect ratio.

Indeed, set cropping to custom, 0/0/0/0.

I tried several times with another smaller video file with the same problem TNA. Not only I kept Crop with custom 0/0/0/0 but also modified the height while keeping the same width, but the proportions in the output showed OK when played on the PC but the BD player always shows the stretched image.

I also tried that with VLC using the first M4V made by HandBrake, but it degraded the video a lot, and what's worse: the BD player showed a "non supported format" warning, althoug it's MP4 and it plays many others MP4 I keep on that external HD.

It was a eight times trial and error effort that let me without clues as how to fix that issue.

A satisfactory solution for me would be to have those black bars above and below the video, as long as I can see the movie in the correct proportions on my TV, with nothing stretched or missing from the horizontal sides. Is there a way to get that with HandBrake?

When I convert with DVDFab, its preview shows those bars, but the output doesn't, just like HB's output. But HB's preview shows no bar at all, and that's why I think it is more faithful to what the output will look like, and that's why I prefer HB for conversions.

I found that I can add those bars with VSDC, but it's an artificial solution that steals areas of the image—precisely what I don't want!

You can leave the bars on with HB if you don't crop them off, but we'd need to see a log to know if you did that correctly.

The bars don't appear when I preview in HB, only in DVDFab. Is there a setting in HB to make them appear?

If the bars don't appear in HandBrake's preview, then you didn't do the above correctly.

You're right, I forgot to set crop to 0/0/0/0. However, as I was working with the smaller video, I sent you info about it, not about the one that made me start this thread. My bad.

The first, bigger movie shows the black bars in HB's preview, the second doesn't (even with that crop setting) and plays stretched on the TV.

So I have solved the case of the first video, which now plays with the right proportions (with bars)—Thank you!

But the second video seems to have no way to add the letterbox bars in HB.
