Intel HEVC QuickSync not available for selection

Post by ukmark62 »

Description of problem or question:
I have HP laptop i5-7200u Kaby Lake processor with 16GB RAM and latest Intel display driver installed (v26.20.100.7262) via Windows Update. Graphics is inbuilt and is Intel HD 620.

I cannot select Intel QSV HEVC codec but I can select Intel QSV H264 under "Video Codec" drop down list.

Is there any further information that I can provide?

Many thanks.

Can you scan a random source please so I can see the hardware detection output in the log.

Also, you might want to use Intel Drivers directly if you can rather than Windows Update as the last couple of WU drivers have had issues with QuickSync.

Thanks,

here's the log. I might try restoring from a recent system backup as a few strange things have happened in the last couple of days regarding display drivers and other issues.

Drivers reporting back as not supported. It also looks like it's missing capabilities on the H.264 side too

I'm guessing switching to official drivers should correct this.

Thanks - you were spot on.

I restored the previous Intel driver (non DCH) and everything is working now!

Sorry to bother you and thanks for your quick response!

Keep up the great work with HB - a great piece of software.

Just FYI - I upgraded to latest graphics driver from Intel directly and everything is still OK.

Further info. The issue I had had nothing to do with display driver versions - it was my own fault.

I had a new script (now modified) which would clean out the Windows driver file repository in order to reduce disk space.
I doubt this will help any others but just in case I'll post the lines I had to remove from my script.

cd C:\WINDOWS\system32\
compact /compactos:always
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /SPSuperseded
rem TAKEOWN /F "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository" /R
rem ICACLS "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository" /T /L /GRANT *S-1-1-0:F
rem RD /s /Q "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\"

The last 3 lines are now commented out as you can see, and it was these 3 lines that were causing the errors I was getting regarding QuickSync AFTER a reboot.

I also have problems with QSV
It works in HandBrake-20190507-465d9f7_x86_64-Win_GUI (Nightly 20190505211836-faf3b92-master (2019050701))
But with HandBrake-20190822-a58118b81_x86_64-SafeMode-Win_GUI I can't choose QSV
So somewhere in between there has been a change that blocks QSV for me.

Any build with "SafeMode" in the name, does NOT include QuickSync, NvENC or VCE. You need to make sure to download the non-safemode builds if you want this functionality.

Thx for a quick reply. I had forgot this option. Now it's works fine...

Having run several objectified quality measurements with QSV vs. x264 / 265, I can't say that having it available is necessarily such a good thing ...
