Description of problem or question:
I put in a dvd, choose which track to rip and after a few minutes, handbrake just stops and says job is done, But usuaklly all it does is rip about a few minutes of the video. I cannot make it take the whole thing EVER

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

I've retried the same video, different slections, different DVDs. he best I can do is to rip one or two chapters in the middle of a program

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
HandBrake 1.2.2 (2019022300)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

windows 1o; acer laptop brand new

Try ripping with makemkv first.

thanks for recommending makemkv
I actually did a really dumb thing and shelled out $40 to buy VideoProc which has turned out to be a Crock
It's good for appending vids and extracting saveable SRT subs from DVDs but it does the SAME thing as handbrake: it only saves portions of the videos
I simply dont get it. I'm not a total moron but neither am I a tech head and I'm just lost

Make sure you are saving the right title in makemkv.

the only way handbrake works is if i retry to rip the same track over and over and over again, sometimes after six or seven runs it'll save the whole track. this is utterly bloody ridiculous
I cannot think of a stupider program. Who the hell designed this thing?

Please read our forum rules and code of conduct.

People are trying to help you, but not every issue can be perfectly replicated. Please try updating to HandBrake 1.3.0 and let us know whether this fixes your issue.

Handbrake has not officially supported RIPPING for 11 years. When you force it to, you have to live with the fact that the unsupported 3rd-party library does not have very good diagnostics for dirty or defective disks; when a defect is hit, that's the end of the encode. Apparently, this fact has not deterred websites from continuing to tell people how to do it.

Which is the "most ridiculous"? Running the proper software for the job, or crying because the lashed-together setup isn't as wonderful as the youtuber said it would be?

RIPPING software will usually tell you it has a problem, so you can figure out you need to clean the disk, or possibly replace it. And since it works so fast, making multiple attempts to get a clean rip doesn't take very long. I can usually rip a multi-episode TV series in less time than it takes handbrake to encode two episodes.

If you want to know how to deal with disks with read errors, the MakeMKV forum has a post for that: If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!.

'Tis a poor workman who blames his tools.
Follow the recommended procedure for cleaning your dvd and rip in makemkv.

hi
I did try makemkv but unfortunately it also aborted the procedure and reported a fatal error
I am a luddite - i have zero technical abilities skills or knowledge
It must show -- It's 2019 and I'm still watching DVDs.
But frankly, I am at a loss. I did try the procedure using a DVD that had never been opened. Never played. The surface looked as clean as anything I've ever seen and yet I still encountered the same issues.
I'm sorry if my troubles seem ridiculous. I'm a Luddite.

If makemkv is failing then your disc is probably bad.

I had a thought - is it possible that the disc driver I am using isn't functioning properly?
It's a no-name brand USB 3 dvd/blu-ray writer and I wonder if that might be the problem
When I'm processing a disc, for example the frames per second reading fluctuates like mad from second to second from 10 fps to 90 or above

I just triked makeMKV with a new DVD
it failed and said "'This device does not exist' occurred while reading xxxx"
Is that an indication my DVD disc drive is the problem?

Reset Windows' view of the drive - unplug it, then plug it back in after Windows acknowledges the unplugging. THEN try the rip again.

You may also have to tell Windows to allow access to the drive - about six months ago, and update came out that made optical drives "privileged" devices by default, and even if you run as administrator, the device is invisible. There are several topics about this on the MakeMKV forum, like this one.
