Black bars on top and bottom of screen

Post by dilbertprof » Thu Oct 17, 2019 12:08 pm

Description of problem or question:
I have a MakeMKV file which I then encode in Handbrake. When I look at the preview window, I don't see any black bars on the top or bottom of the screen. However, when I play it on my laptop, the bars appear. How do I remove them. The source video is from an Anomorphic DVD with aspect ratio of 2.35:1

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10

Re: Black bars on top and bottom of screen

Post by Rodeo » Thu Oct 17, 2019 12:40 pm

The preview window adjusts to whatever the video dimensions are, so you'll never see black bars there (unless you disable autocrop).

The black bars (letterboxing) are there because your video is 2.35:1 (as you pointed out) but your laptop display is most likely 1.78:1 (a.k.a. 16:9) -> the video is wider than your display.

In order to not have any black bars, you would have to cut off the sides of the video, losing part of the picture. Software media players can usually do this at playback time, which is better than discarding the information during the re-encode with HandBrake (with the playback time option, you're allowed to change your mind without having to go back to the Blu-ray and encoding the movie again).

Whatever software you're using for playback presumably has documentation available somewhere.
