.mpeg to .mp4 produces longer file

Post by Studio461 »

Description of problem or question:

I do a lot of converting of old VHS to digital. They come in as .mpeg files which my editing software (Adobe Premiere) doesn't like. So Adobe told me to use handbrake to convert them. It's been a bit since I needed to do it.

I went to do it last week and handbrake produces a longer file. Up to 10min longer. Audio doesn't seem to be affected, but the video is. Video is fine towards beginning, but then is distorted. The frame rate is the same on both. I am not a newbie at video editing. This makes no sense.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Convert .mpeg to .mp4 at 29.97fps

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10

Could you please post your HB encode log, instructions can be found here:

Yea need the encode log, not just the scan log.

Also I'd suggest ripping with something for that purpose, like MakeMKV, then feeding the video file to HB. Rippers are better with retries and stuff for physical media than HB is.

Source file is all screwed up, HB can't cope. Try VideoReDo's Quick Stream Fix.

You're also using a fairly high bitrate for standard definition content (8Mbps). Try constant quality with a reasonable RF like 20 to 22.

I think my IT guy is going to download a ripper for me. Sadly, those .mpeg files are what my Pinnicle Dazzle creates

I suggest you use a tool like VideoReDo as mduell suggests to repair the mpeg files, then use HandBrake's Production presets, which are designed to facilitate the editing workflow.
