HEVC file not recognised

I have just bought a Canon XF705 video camera, and want to shoot and edit 4K videos. I have been shooting in HD with a Canon XF305 for some years, and editing with Pinnacle Studio 20. Have moved to a new, well-specced PC, with Pinnacle Studio 22 Ultimate. A test file from the new camera shot in XF-AVC imports fine, but this is just HD. If I shoot in XF-HEVC at 3840 x 2160 (4K) then I can hear the audio, but there is no picture. The Canon XF Utility plays the 4K file fine though. Pinnacle have suggested converting my 4K file using HandBrake, however, HandBrake does not recognise the file either. I have attached the activity log file below. If anyone can throw any light on this, I would be most grateful.

HandBrake version is 1.2.2

OS is Windows 10, 64 bit.

8 seconds? What happens if you feed something longer?

Any chance you could share a sample?

My guess is there is something funny going on with the container as it's not identifying the video correctly.

Sorry - it is around 40MB, although only 10 secs or so. As well as the Canon XF utility, it will also play in Media Player Classic. So it doesn't seem to be completely broken.

Does the Canon XF utility let you maybe remux the file?

Test results:
- ffmpeg 4.1.4 -> Can't read file
Duration: 00:00:02.88, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 115387 kb/s
Stream #0:0: Video: none, none(progressive), 3840x2160, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc

- VLC -> Can't read file

- ffmpeg master -> Seems to recognise the file now, and will run the encoder but it's not producing useful video output.
Duration: 00:00:02.88, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 115387 kb/s
Stream #0:0: Video: hevc (Rext), yuv422p10le(tv, bt709, progressive), 3840x2160 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc

Might be worth submitting the file upstream to the ffmpeg folks.

Thanks for testing, I haven't had time to try it. Maybe it would take more than a simple remux.

Using FFmpeg master's libavcodec in a build of HB or ffmpeg command-line? Latter works for me, both ffplay playback and ffmpeg remux to Matroska then playback in VLC…

ffmpeg cli master encoded, but the output video didn't playback in vlc.

I didn't check if their windows builds were actually up-to-date though, so maybe it's lagging behind.

Just tested MKVToolnix, doesn't accept the file.

just tested with XmediaRecode
File is recognized and without any problem recoded to MKV (using H.265 Nvidia Nvenc)
