Handbrake Log

Hi

I have a family wedding which is on 5 DVDs (4.7GB), the combined size of the videos in the Video_TS folders is 17.1 GB

DVD 1 has a combined bitrate of (VOBS) 4400 kb/s 720x576
DVD 2 is 4400 kb/s
DVD 3 is 4400 kb/s
DVD 4 is 5000 kb/s
DVD 5 is 4500 kb/s

I used handbrake (see log) RF21 (very slow) x264 ,high 4.1, mp4 and my total conversion of all the dvds equals to 9.41 GB.

DVD 1 to MP4 = 1621 kb/s
DVD 2 to MP4 = 3303 kb/s
DVD 3 to MP4 = 3192 kb/s
DVD 4 to MP4 = 2087 kb/s
DVD 5 to MP4 = 2555 kb/s

Is that right, i did use RF21 for SD material and ive still got really high data rates in there, should i redo them again at RF25 as i thought h246 SD material should be between 400-1000 kb/s

thanks

First upgrade to the latest version of HB.

Then try ripping your DVD with makemkv, then process with HB

Wow, 5 year old release of HB.

If you want lower bitrates, choose a slower encoder preset and a higher RF target.

hi

i downloaded Makemkv, unfortunatelythe is not done anything, mkv file size is the same as vob file its not been reduced.

will the same settings RF21 x264 very slow on a newer version of HB give me a much smaller mp4 file

handbrake settings for SD is 18-20 i used 21

Yes, MakeMKV is a ripper, so it makes a rip. Then you can feed the MKV file to HB for the further processing you want.

No, the same settings aren't going make much of a difference. Which is why you need a higher RF target if you want smaller sizes for that content.

"Should be" doesn't exist.
Since your DVDs are already quite compressed (6 Mbps is considered nominal), I wouldn't go below 50% of that without expecting visible degradation. You're already almost there, but go ahead and crank up the RF if you don't mind the tradeoff.

1 Mbps for SD is doable if your source is clean 25 Mbps Blu-ray.

Your DVDs are only 4+ Mbps MPEG-2. At this rate, there should be blocking artifacts. Ironically, the lower RF number you use, the harder x264 tries to preserve them and bitrate goes up quickly.

If you want to lower the bitrate, you need to deblock the video a little.
