No Valid Source Or Titles with 1.2.2

Post by Ikia »

Description of problem or question:
Sorry if I'm missing anything, I'm new here. I've been using Handbrake for over a year with no issue. But when it updated to 1.2.2 all of a sudden, every DVD comes back as "No valid source or titles found". New disc, old disc, disc I've used with success in the best with Handbrake. Just wanting to get this fixed so I can continue backing up my library.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Current - 1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10 - current update/version

The second log indicates that disk reads failed, too.

There are 3rd party add-on libraries that bring CSS decryption to handbrake They have not been supported BY the handbrake team for over 10 years, because they do not always work, and they're bad at reporting read errors when they do. Not to mention that operating system (and other) updates can remove the linkages they rely on. They are not under the control of the handbrake team, or any of us who volunteer time to help out around here.

That's why we recommend using the right tools for the job. Ripping tools, such as MakeMKV and AnyDVD, are intended to remove copy protection, and they do so quickly and efficiently. They create files that work well as sources for handbrake, without DRM.

And, they also report errors better than the 3rd-party libraries.

And, if you ever find yourself ripping more than one disk at a time, you will find that the rip-then-encode work flow is faster, as far as YOUR time, swapping disks. Ripping tools can typically read the data off the disk at 5-10 times the rate handbrake can encode.

I downloaded the MakeMKV that you mentioned, it's also not saving the video.

Code: Select all

Saving 1 titles into directory C:/Program Files (x86)/MakeMKV
Error 'OS error - Access is denied' occurred while creating 'C:/Program Files (x86)/MakeMKV/title_t04.mkv'
Failed to save title 4 to file C:/Program Files (x86)/MakeMKV/title_t04.mkv
0 titles saved, 1 failed
Prior to MakeMKV not saving the file, I wasn't a fan. One app (MakeMKV) to get the video file from the DVD to computer, another (Handbrake) to do that file into another file? I don't understand it at all. Before I'd hit "open source" > "DVD" > "Start Encode", and then had a video file I could watch. Why is a third party add-on or another app needed now when Handbrake use to do the job?

HB hasn't supported encrypted DVDs for more than a decade now. Some third party hacks provide partial support, but it's unreliable. The HB team is not interested in the protected disk games.

Pick a destination that you have write access to for the MakeMKV output.

What makes one encrypted or not? Isn't every DVD encrypted? I don't know anything about this stuff, that's why I loved Handbrake - because I'd put a DVD in and would have the file. It doesn't do encrypted DVDs, but the same DVD worked in Handbrake before the update is what I don't get.

After trying the MakeMKV one, I tried to open source in Handbrake again. This time half the titles scanned, the other half skipped still. But the first preview was black, second was grain, the rest were good. But when I hit encode it said queue finished and it gave me a 0 second video file.

This seems to have worked for MakeMKV output! Didn't realize the preset location was somewhere I didn't have access to write. So once this file is done with it's output, what's Handbrake do? Does it make the file smaller? A better file type? What's the purpose?

With most programs, the initial directory is where ever the software was installed, which Windows (and MacOS) won't let you write to, EXCEPT in the installation process.

Woodstock, oh got ya. Makes sense.

So I just finished a video going through MakeMKV then Handbrake. You all were right, it's nice to have both programs working on different things at the same time. Though I'm still unsure why Handbrake stopped working, the correct way may be better as I adjust to it. Thanks for all your helps guys!

All commercial disks are encrypted. Some also have other structural protection.
HB hasn't supported commercial DVDs for more than a decade now. Third party hacks add some support, but it's inconsistent.

If you don't have any issues with the MakeMKV output, keep that.
If you need changes for compatibility reasons, size preferences, subtitle burn in, etc, then choose your preferences in in HB.

Hi folks, having the same issues as Ikia. Trying to use AnyDvd, Fairmount, DVDFab and now makeMKV and none of them work for me. Posted in the MakeMKV forum asking for help there but nothing has come back. What am i doing wrong? I have write access to the destination folder so its not that. i get "Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION occurred while reading...' on all my DVDs both old and new. Packing it in for the night. Been at it for hours reading forums and searching. My last effort is to post here on this thread as its similar. Apologies if its the wrong place.
