Handbrake Unable to Rip DVD? Problem DVD DataBase?

Post by KenithO »

Hi,

After ripping a number of movie DVDs finally came across one Bewitched Movie (2005) that Handbrake runs into a problem.

Googled and found "When HandBrake won't rip your DVDs" by By Christopher Breen (MAC 911). Will add I am using Windows 7 64 bit.
Since article was pub FEBRUARY 25, 2013 am wondering if it is out of date or if can be applicable to Windows?

Also checked Forum "Activity Log" info.

Since the DVD has been out for ~ 14 years hard to believe someone else has not had this problem.

Is there a Problem DVD DataBase?

Thanks

HB doesn't support any commercial disks. Third party hacks may work sometimes, but are unreliable.

Use software intended for DVD ripping, like MakeMKV. Then use HB if you want further processing.

Direct ripping of commercial (i.e., encrypted) DVDs has not been supported in handbrake since November 2008 (i.e., over a decade). The same hack that made it work prior to that still exists, and some people recommend it, but it isn't supported because:

The third-party add-on is something the handbrake project has NO control over.
It does not support all forms of DVD copy protection.
It is often broken by operating system updates.
When it does work, it does not properly report read errors, which causes people to report a failure in handbrake when they have a dirty disk.

Thanks everyone for your comments! Am amazed that HandBrake works as well as it does with commercial DVDs.

mduell thanks for the MakeMKV tip! Will try!

Woodstock thanks for the detailed explanation!

rollin_eng thanks for the link! Considering the above info, think will try MakeMKV first.

Installed OK but when tried to Run got "this application version is too old...

Looked around and found v1.85 same problem.

There are a number of topics on the MakeMKV board about the error you got. The install file has a key that expired at the end of January, but there is a key that is valid until the end of this month posted in their announcements section.

The ones currently available from Microsoft.

But that's not your issue, the key issue Woodstock described is your issue.

Woodstock,

Thanks for the detailed info, esp about the announcements section!

Was able to find "The current beta key is.... and is valid until end of March 2019. Please check back for updated key on this page."

Are you also using MakeMKV?

If yes, do you have any tips for a beginner?

Googled and found "How to rip DVDs and Blu-ray discs with MakeMKV and HandBrake" By Kirk McElhearn Senior Contributor, Macworld MARCH 13, 2017
Interesting to read "...This app has been in beta forever".

Question: How long do the keys last?

Also found "How to rip Blu-Ray disks with MakeMKV and Handbrake" by TOM WESTRICK 10 Oct 2018

To date, the closest to a User Guide is "How To Use MakeMKV" by Chris Brass MAY 22, 2018 but I have not searched Youtube.

Yes, I use MakeMKV.

As for tips, I'd just recommend looking at this topic on the MakeMKV forum once you play a bit with it. If you decide to move into BD and especially UHD BD, there are some other topics (rather long) that cover what you need in hardware for "best experience", but it gets super confusing if you don't have some experience with how DVD ripping works.

Both programs (handbrake and MakeMKV) allow you to play, using different options and seeing what happens. "Oh, that was good!" or "Oh, I didn't like what that did!" are part of learning.
