Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
I have tried to reduce to core with DTS Passthrough when using a DTS-HD source and it always just copies the DTS-HD source. Is this something I'm doing wrong or does handbrake simply not reduce to core?

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
Could you please post your HB logs, instructions can be found here:

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
I will post my log. I was just wondering if handbrake supported DTS-HD to DTS core extraction? I don't read anywhere in the documentation that it does. If it does then I'll post my logs for sure!

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
Yes, HandBrake does. The core is identified as a separate "DTS" track in the source audio list in HandBrake.

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
I should qualify, this only works with transport streams where they have provided DTS and the HD extensions on separate PIDs
Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
Well every source that I've tested, off of BluRay rips that I do myself, it has never gave me the option to use the DTS when there is DTS-HD. The only thing it will usually show is the DTS-HD, never seperate.
I usually have to pull the core with MKVTOOLNIX. I have tried on several occasions to just do the core passthrough (dts) it always just copies over the DTS-HD.
EDIT: Just tested again, selected the DTS-HD source, because there is no DTS source btw, and it defaults to the fallback encoder I'm assuming AC3~640kbps.

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
MakeMKV can also extract the DTS core from Blu-ray sources.

Which is why we need to see a log. I just tried it. It works as advertised.Well every source that I've tested, off of BluRay rips that I do myself, it has never gave me the option to use the DTS when there is DTS-HD. The only thing it will usually show is the DTS-HD, never seperate.
Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
We should mention that at the top of the page in something. In bold colored text maybe.

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
FYI, in the log it will look something like this
Notice the similarity in the 'id'. For the DTS core, the id is composed of the PID and the mpeg substream id. For the full DTS-HD it is just the PID.
Code: Select all
[14:25:29] bd: audio id=0x711100, lang=English (DTS), 3cc=eng
[14:25:29] bd: audio id=0x1100, lang=English (DTS-HD MA), 3cc=eng

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
The only options available are DTS-HD in the audio track and an AC3 commentary track. There is no DTS track. If I select DTS passthrough it just falls back to the AC3 encoder.
Again I can pull the dts from this dts-hd track out with mkvtoolnix. So I would love to be able to do it with hand brake.

Re: Reduce to core from DTS-HD to DTS?
Are you using MakeMKV to rip? HandBrake doesn't know how to extract the DTS core from an mkv track. The mechanism is different than for a transport stream (which is the BD format). If you use MakeMKV's disc backup option (instead of output to mkv) HandBrake can separate that DTS core from DTS-HD. As Rodeo said, MakeMKV can also separate out the DTS core into the mkv for you prior to running it through HandBrake.
