1.7 gig avi can't be made smaller

Post by Mech »

I have some camera dvr files that I save and I'm just going through many of my files and i like to just shrink them down before I store them. Unfortunately I can't seem to be able to do this with these avi files. Any suggestions?:

I just choose the file like any other and add it to handbrake. I have tried the different settings and the file just gets larger instead.:

HandBrake version 1.1.2:

Pick a lower quality target (higher RF, like 28), and a slower encoder preset (like normal instead of veryfast), and maybe try a light denoise filter.

Your source is already compressed more than you are asking handbrake to do, so no, it won't get smaller.

Like mduell said, if you want smaller, you need to reduce either the quality, the noise, or both.

I have multiple cameras that compress the video severely to keep their bit rate low. Attempting to use a CRF value less than 24 will make the file BIGGER, and 26 to 28 nets out at the same size... with lower quality, because of extra generation of compression. I gave up on making them smaller, because they just looked worse with little size change.

I just tried the suggestion without the filter and it did make the file smaller. It's a dvr video so the resolution is not the best, but still did worked a bit. I just don't want my files to take too much space if I can help it. I don't have large drives so this is the reason I do this. I did use 30 just to check it and it went from 1.7 gigs to 867 so at least it seems to work. I do have some large dvr avi files that I definitely rather shrink a bit. They load faster too.

You can put 1,000 files that size on a $50 drive.

If they're DVR files, there is "tune" for the NLMeans filter intended for cleaning up digitized VHS tapes that might help, but it is NOT fast.
