PAL DVD to x265, resolution problem

Post by Markomaani »

Hi,

I'm trying to convert my DVD collection to x265 to store in my computer.

I have learned the last few days about SAR, DAR and PAR and I'm all confused.
I know the DVD is some sort of non square pixels but I don't know how to convert them into square ones.

Could anyone tell me in what settings I should convert my DVDs?

Here is GSpot information from one of the DVDs
https://i.imgur.com/uwxtkvo.png

I would like to rip it with as less guality loss as possible.

The first question to ask is, what are you using to RIP your DVDs. HandBrake isn't a ripper, so you'll need something that removes DVD encryption before converting with HandBrake.

The second question to ask is, why do you want square pixels? This isn't something you should care about unless you have a very broken video player.

If you have a specific problem with how HandBrake is encoding something, tell us the symptoms and post an encode log. It sounds like you may be trying to diagnose something yourself and running down blind alleys.

Oh sorry, I already ripped the DVDs to my computer and they are now in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Okay so maybe I don't need square pixels. This is the reason I'm here, I'm so confused with all this! I thought x265 might not accept non square pixels.

x265 is not limited to square pixels.

In general, if there is a limitation to any of the stages in the encoding pipeline within HandBrake, HandBrake will adjust settings for you so that the encoding will be "successful". Though sometimes this results in output that isn't exactly what was intended

Okay we are getting somewhere.

So here is my file loaded and chosen MKC x265 576 preset
https://i.imgur.com/zjYYHm0.png

758x576 isn't really 16:9 aspect ratio and it's doing cropping which I definately don't want. I want the whole picture.

So what I should fix or is this the optimal way?

If you don't want cropping, select custom and set all values to 0. Generally it is wasteful to disable auto-crop since it removes black borders that contain no content. But the fact that auto-crop detected such wide left and right borders is unusual. An activity log showing us the scan HandBrake does of the source would tell us more.

The actual aspect ratio during playback will be a computation based on the pixel aspect ratio and the resolution. Since you didn't post a log, we don't know what pixel aspect this video is.

The cropping is definitely strange. Maybe the entire video is one very dark scene and it's misdetecting black borders. In any case, setting custom cropping with all 0 will result in a video that is 16:9 when played back.

Removing the crop outputted file with resolution of 534x576 which sounds pretty weird. But it still shows 16:9 and when playbacked looks okay.

Is this correct?

You want a final resolution of 720x576. I forgot that you'll have to bump the resolution back up. It doesn't automatically keep "max" resolution when changing crop values.

Okay now the resolution of the video is 720x576.
My biggest mistake was trying to get the resolution to 720x405 which would be square pixels if I understand anything.
Now I just need to find the optimal RF for the videos.

Thank you so much for the help!
