Help with AAC Bitrate

Post by rminten »

Description of problem or question:

I'm extracting music video files from a DVD source to play in a club, so these will will be played loud and need to be at the highest audio quality. I've been testing the Fast 1080p preset. The bitrate is AAC 160, but the audio is not what it is on the DVD source. I have very sensitive hearing and the audio sounds very compressed - like a 128k mp3 - not very good.

What I need to know is what bitrate should I use to get the exact same audio that's on the DVD. I've tried 256 and 320, which sound much better, but what settings should I set to get the exact audio from the DVD with no compression. Or should I use a different codec? Is this possible in Handbrake?

Thanks!

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

Version 1.1.1 64-Bit

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10

256 kbps is what Apple uses for music without video. Some iDevices only support 160 kbps when the audio is part of a video file. If your playback software/device supports it, go all the way to 320 kbps AAC. Alternatively, if you can use the MKV container, you can use FLAC which is lossless.

Check out CDEx with the optional LAME encoder.
You will have total control over things you didn't know existed.
For music, avoid HE and LC codecs.

@musicvid I'm not sure that's helpful in the context of video? AAC is measurably better than MP3 in just about every test...

Just pass through the source audio if possible.

Thanks everyone for their responses - much appreciated.

@rollin_eng - I've now done some testing with the pass thru based on your suggestion. I"m assuming this a direct copy of the audio from the DVD using the codec chosen - correct me if I"m wrong. I tested the AAC passthru and auto passthru, and both resulted in codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (ac-3). These are from the codec information when playing these videos in VLC media player. Any idea why it reverted to AC3 when I had AAC passthru selected? Are any of the options available uncompressed audio?

Thanks for your help.

The reason I did not suggest passing through the original audio is the source being LPCM, which HandBrake cannot pass through. It is falling back to the AC3 encoder which is not ideal in this case.

Since you're using VLC you should be able to encode lossless FLAC audio using the MKV container. Alternatively, use 320 kbps AAC in MP4/MKV.

@BradleyS - thanks for the further detail here - much appreciated. I'm trying to learn all of this and make the best decision, so I appreciate this info.

VLC is only for my testing on my PC. In the 'live' environment these will be played with a club DJ mixing application called Virtual DJ, which can play both MP4 (.m4v) and MKV (.mkv) video formats, and for audio I've tested most and all work except for FLAC 24-bit. Based on my testing of audio quality vs file size I think I'm going to go with 320 kbps AAC. This minimally increases the file size and sounds best in my testing.

Let me know if there's anything else to add. I appreciate everyone taking the time to help educate me on these settings

Ahhh, I just assumed there was ac3 audio present.

You should probably try makemkv and just rip your DVD to lossless mkv's.
