Will handbrake work on a WINDOWS-BASED Tablet?

Post by Mike.TempCX »

Hi All,

I trust you are all well.

I am currently wanting to find out if Handbrake will work on a "windows" tablet (OS 8.1 / 10), as my employer is set on using handbrake on tablets (which there is no ANDROID or IOS versions) and has asked me to look into this... needless to say, I'm getting a lot of conflicting information online.

So far, I have looked at the minimum requirements for handbrake (Located here: "https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... ments.html") and find that most windows-based tablets use ATOM processors, of which I'm not sure is stronger as Handbrake mentioned on their minimum requirements page. Obviously straight out buying a tablet to test this is not the way I'd like to go if I can help it.

If there is anyone that knows more about this or can assist, it would be highly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

It might run, but encoding video on a low-power device like a tablet will either be extremely slow (if the OS throttles the CPU properly to keep temps down) or fry your CPU.

Anything with an Intel Atom should be considered a non-starter. Many won't be compatible, those that are will be too slow.

Something like a Microsoft Surface (core i7) can run HandBrake but it still wouldn't be recommended.

Errr why would your employer want you to run HB on a tablet?

You should probably tell them to hire someone who understands video encoding because they don’t seem to.

I don't know - it might be interesting to see which catches fire first, the CPU or the battery? :)

Thank you so much for the reply!

He wants to have a mobile solution for video transfer from people on the road to the Head Office with as little data-usage as possible. Pretty much video compression applications on ANDROID and IOS are not great and he is set on using handbrake to compress the videos for transfer as we use handbrake in the office.

I have suggested laptops to be used, but have met much resistance due to them being too "cumbersome", so I'm grasping at straws to find a solution. With that being said, I think its time to explain that tablets won't work for this XD.

I hope that clears things up

As video encoding is very cpu intensive it is not really suited to low power devices like phones and tablets.

If you have people on the road who need to encode video your trade off will be size/weight vs power.

You could get a tablet or ultra portable laptop but it will be slower at encoding than a mobile workstation type laptop. So it’s really up to you what is more important.
