Newbie Youtube Video Question

Post by bob johnson »

Description of problem or question:

Hi Helpful persons.

I have a number of video files. Most were sourced from Youtube originally. Zipping them does not reduce them. I thought if I tried using handbrake to compress them it might save room on my disk. "Compressing" and selecting much lower than a placebo quality still results in about a 4 times increase in file size.

I imagine that these videos were all very compressed when they were uploaded - and that this is pretty common. IOW it is impossible to further compress them. Is that true? Are there any tips to get them to compress a bit more? Is there any way to guestimate what will slightly increase their compression, without having to run a dozen tests on each one?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

Most recent available as of yesterday.

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 Spring Creator update

Post by Woodstock »

Nothing is impossible. Probably undesirable, but not impossible. The reason video does not "zip" well is that all the easy to compress stuff has already been done by specialized programs that sacrificed the ability to regenerate the original (lossy encoding), and the result is hard to compress more in a loss-less manner.

To reduce size, you either throw more computing time at the task, or you accept a reduced quality of output. Either way, the result is going to have lower quality. The RF=28 setting used in your log is throwing a lot of quality out the window, but, if that is still acceptable to you, try RF=30 and see if it is still acceptable to you.

Or buy a larger drive array.

YouTube videos are already over compressed. The only "acceptable" file size reduction would come through reducing frame dimensions, frame rate, or both, but not by reducing bitrate by itself.

I appreciate your helpful reply. That's what I was looking for - simplified so I could understand it.
