Application Crashes with 1.1.0

Post by y2kse »

Description of problem or question:

Application crash near-immediate after starting encode with 1.1.0. 1.0.7 works fine with same materials.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Encode will generally report < 0.5% progress before failing. Subtitle scan if done appears to always complete. Also crashes when using Legacy > Universal presets. I also tried running Handbrake as Administrator, this BSOD the entire system with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.1.0

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log) Typical log of a failure...have seen a few examples that made past snyc: log entries (e.g. [17:52:51] 3.011333s: Video -> Film is the final entry in one failed job)

AnyDVD HD. The same rip converts fine in 1.0.7.

If your seeing a Blue screen the most common causes are:
1. Overheating
2. If there is any overclock, turn it off. (That includes XMP on memory).
3. Bad Drivers. Make sure they are all up-to-date.
4. Bad Power Suppl
5. Bad Memory -> Run MemText86 for a few full passes.

HandBrake works really well at rooting out system instability because it exercises the system really well. Better than many stress test tools ironically.

BSOD only occurs when I run as Administrator; otherwise, only Handbrake crashes. CPU max temps under Handbrake 1.0.7 encodes are < 70°C and under Prime 95 with small FFT < 85°C. Disabling ASUS CPU Multicore Enhancement and XMP did not fix crashes. The system is 100% stable in every benchmarking tool and other applications (including 1.0.7). I just tested a nightly build (HandBrake-20180411-6f799bb_x86_64-Win_GUI) and that also did not crash during encode.

Not actually solved. The nightly he's using is 1.1.0.

So, HandBrake crashing will lilley be because he's using a chip that supports AVX-512. We've put in a fix for that which should prevent HandBrake crashing.

The BSOD however, if it's caused by that, then there is a kernel level bug here in Windows. Otherwise the system isn't actually "100% Stable"

p.s You'd be surprised how many folks pass a "stress" test after overclocking, only for HandBrake to push the system a bit further and have it crash. Most stress tests are a little weak on what they actually do. It's quite common to have to dial back AVX multiplier to get a system stable.

Well, the BSOD only happened when I ran as Administrator and in basically the same place the crashes were occurring so I would think the BSOD was related.

Perhaps an additional piece of information with another file. The file that gets created using the same preset options I used with 1.0.7 and the nightly I gave above seems to consistently be 864 bytes in size. MediaInfo reports the following for the failed file.
