The encode never actually started. The first pass ran however you came across a bug in x265 which caused the 2nd pass to fail to start. So no file was ever written.

This was fixed in the newer version of x265 that was included in the 1.0.x series of HandBrake

Short of not using 2-pass, there is no workaround for the old version your using. this will intermittently happen.

Wow - I continued to get "progress" reports with percentages and remaining time for the entire three days I thought it was working. I also used Check for Updates before I started and got a message saying No new updates. So maybe some error checking could be added, or maybe check the Updates script since it didn't report a new version.

You only saw the progress for the 1st pass. The first pass is only analysing your source and generating statistics which feed into the 2nd pass which is what actually encodes your source. You were likely in for another 1~3 days of encoding had it actually not failed the first pass.

With regards to the upgrade checker. It is no longer available for older versions since they do not support TLS 1.1 or later that's now mandatory to securely connect to the site with HTTPS.

I am now doing a new render with Windows Nightly 2018022600158 using H.265 - it has been running for three days. The new file in the destination directory says 0 KB, however - should I see the actual file size as the process is running or will it stay at 0 KB until it is completed? I do not want to have the same problem again with no file created after all this time. HB reports that it is doing the second of 2 passes and is 73% complete, but the file size does not change as the hours pass.

This is actually fairly normal on most systems.

To clarify, it is somewhat typical for the underlying operating system to report small file sizes until the encode is complete. If HandBrake’s progress is, well... progressing, then this is fine.

Try right clicking on the file and selecting properties.

It's dubious. Windows usually reports some size in a few minutes at most.

The only scenarios where I can think it wouldn't (and depends on scenario) Write Caching and Network Shares (depending on type)

I assume your "E" drive is local and not RAID?

If there was write failures, HandBrake would stop almost immediately on the 2nd pass so it would be one of the above or Windows just being broken.

So the answer is -- started on Feb 27th and finished today. Got the file size for the first time after the Queue finished (10 GB). So a Windows thing or an HB thing, not sure. Doesn't matter, since all I really wanted was to be sure there was an actual file at the end of the process.
Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

It’s a Windows thing.

I sometimes see it where it won’t update the Windows explorer view, but right clicking and looking at the file properties will show you the current size.
