Point is:
I use AnyDVD to rip a DVD (did so earlier this week) -> Handbrake -> Subtitles display fine.
Got a new BlueRay -> Used MakeMKV -> get a nice MKV (25GB) including subtitles perfectly -> Used Handbrake to reduce size -> Subtitles gone.
Used the same BlueRay -> AnyDVD -> Handbrake -> Subtitles gone.
No changes in settings and those worked fine before.
I just went through the "generate preview" with the MKV ripped by MakeMKV and here's the log:

The log you provided shows multiple subtitle tracks in the output. What is causing you to claim the subtitles are gone?

Viewing the file with ZoomPlayer, selecting any Subtitle -> Nothing is show.
Take any other file, including the MKV source, displaying it with ZoomPlayer, selecting any subtitle -> Subtitles are nicely shown.

Zoom Player apparently does not support PGS (bluray) subtitles, so it won't see them. Web says it needs a plug-in to view VOBSUB subtitles from DVDs, but no mention of support for PGS.

I have no idea whether Movie Player supports PGS. VLC from Videolan.org does, so that is one way to check that the subtitles are in the output file.

Your player obviously supports them in the source, so if you encode with no cropping do you see the subtitles?

Yes. In the MKV and the Disk Backup they are displayed fine.

So, if you encode with no cropping do they display properly?

Most of them are empty or near-empty (the largest one has like, 38 packets).

PotatoCarl, can you show a screenshot of the tracks tree for the main title in MakeMKV for your Golden Circle rip? No need to re-rip it, just want to check the config. For example (make sure to expand all sections):

As I forgot to bring the golden circle today, I used the freshly arrived "Man from U.N.C.L.E". Same problem here. Zoom Player displays them fine when I start the MKV rip. When going through Handbrake (Preview) they are displayed.

Making a Hard Disc backup with AnyDVD and having it run through Handbrake shows in the Preview no subtitles.

Going directly to the backup folder shows the subtitles just fine (ZoomPlayer).

As I don't know how you directly imcluded an image into the forum, you'll find it here (selection of MakeMKV):

https://www.crash-online.de/mkv_screenshot.jpg

This is the UNCLE disc. I will retry with the Golden Circle one and post another screenshot.

Okay, here's the screenshot of the Golden Circle Blueray:

https://www.crash-online.de/screenshot_goldencircle.jpg

After the Handbrake conversion finished, I checked the freshly made MKV and - not subtitles.

So, regarding "The Man From UNCLE" Blueray I can say the following:

- AnyDVD Backup shows subtitles fine
- MakeMKV backup shows subtitles fine
- In Handbrake when I use the MakeMKV one and go through preview, they are displayed.
- In Handbrake when I use the AnyDVD backup and go through preview they are NOT displayed
- When I convert the AnyDVD backup through Handbrake, they are NOT displayed.

In "The Golden Circle" both, MakeMKV and AnyDVD show the subs, but after converting with Handbrake, none of them shows them.

So, I am truly confused and out of my depth here. The settings used is the same I used for some time which worked like mint. I won't claim I am fault free here and maybe I did something basic wrong - although It worked that way for a rather extensive collection. Maybe one of those freaking Windows or whatever upgrade broke something, but I just want to go back to "Insert Disc - Copy - Convert - Enjoy movie on Kodi".

Anything I can to do indentify the problem further for the experts?

I have set in the Handbrake Video the cropping from "Automatic" to "Custom" and set all values to 0 (from 138-0-138-0 starting at the 1200 position going clockwise).

Preview of Golden Circle from the MakeMKV MKV: No subs anywhere...
The MakeMKV MKV shows them fine...

If you mean by "a clip" a MKV generated by MakeMKV, just did so to verify the cropping.

Here's the log of converting from the MKV file where the Subs are displayed.

The log is from the file that *had* subtitles before conversion and *after* the handbrake run they are gone (-> they are displayed as being available but when selected are "invisible").

Oh and coming back to an earlier post: ZoomPlayer can work with PGS subtitles fine, so it is not a ZoomPlayer fault. Just had to double check this.

In the MKV generated by MakeMKV: YES
In the File Generated by HandBRAKE: NO

When I check in ZoomPlayer "Stream" it displayes "Subtitles" to be available. If I select any of those in the MakeMKV generated file, they are displayed. If I select any of those in the Handbrake generated file, they are not displayed.

My definition of subtitles present: They can be selected in a video player AND are displayed accordingly.

If they can be selected and do not display: "no subtitles"
If they cannot be selected and do not display: "no subtitles", but that is me because they are not included
If they can be selected and are displayed: "subtitles".

Hope that clarifies it.

I’m curious as to whether ZoomPlayer can display the subs correctly.

If you encode with NO cropping what happens (please post logs for this).

Or try playing with VLC.

Edit: nevermind, this is a 30-second encode. Sigh…

Can we get a real log please? This is 30 seconds only. You can set the encoder preset to ultrafast, we don't care about the video track here.
