Matching my x264 Settings with H265

Post by gamecaptor »

Happy Holidays and Happy (early) New Years HB folks! I have been using HardBrake for many years now and have always used x264 and generally been very happy with my results. I recently started playing with H265 and I would say the output is VERY close to my x264 outputs but it seems just slightly more "blocky" (I'm not sure I am using the correct words to describe it but it's the only thing I can think of). My question is, is there any additional settings I can add to my H265 settings that would help sharpen it up a bit (I don't think it's a DEBLOCK setting issue that I'm seeing).

I am currently using the latest nightly build of HandBrake on Windows 10 Creator Update.

Cheers!

Your useless screenshots are both for QSV H.265.

In general you're never going to match x264 with QSV (H.264 or H.265)... QSV is fast, but it's not very good or configurable.

Well it's pretty configurable actually, compared to many other encoders Not as much as x264/x265 perhaps, but QSV definitely isn't the worst offender (just take a look at Apple's video encoding APIs)…

mduell, you're right, I screwed up.

Rodeo, after doing a lot of testing I think I'm better off just sticking to x264. While I love the fast encoding time and the compression of H265, it just doesn't seem to produce the same quality as what I'm getting with x264.

Cheers both of you.
