Subtitle line break flags

Newbie here. I have figured out most settings for my needs but I am stuck on subtitles. After formatting using Handbrake my Blu Ray player, an Oppo BDP-83 reads the line break flag "\N" as text and shows it in the subtitles. Several software players I use don't show the \N but my stand alone player does. What settings should I use to fix this or can it be corrected?

Seems to be a limitation of the Oppo BDP-83 not supporting unicode text.

The subtitles you are working with are text based and text can be encoded
in different formats. The standard text encoding for .mkv files is utf-8
which is unicode.

As a workaround for your player you could probably extract or download
the subtitles as subtitle files (i.e. .srt, .ass), save them in a supported text
format (i.e. ascii) and put them next to your encoded .mkv files.
