Dual Audio MKV silent after conversion

Posted: Sat Dec 02, 2017 7:28 pm

A couple days ago I wanted to reduce the size of some dual audio animations using a custom preset I made after reading more about the advanced options. I've done this before and the resulting file always worked but this was the first time with a dual audio file.

I'm 100% sure I have chosen the Audio Track, except instead of recoding it I went with passthru because I experienced audio muffing in past.

These were the options I've passed:

Code: Select all

level=4.0:vbv-maxrate=20000:rc-lookahead=30:vbv-bufsize=25000:ref=16:bframes=16:b-adapt=2:b-pyramid=strict:me=tesa:subme=10:analyse=none:trellis=2
And after finished the resulting M4V was silent and when checking the audio tracks on VLC, there was none.

I don't have a log file because either the process itself was a success, or after I closed the program the log was purged, I don't really know. I would really like not having to repeat the attempt just to have the log because it took more than 4h o.O

What could I possibly have done wrong?

I'm using Handbrake 1.0.7 on Windows 7 x64

Thank you for your time

Without the required log, we have no idea what the characteristics of your source are, and how handbrake responded to your request. It could be as simple as telling handbrake to "pass through" a different audio type than is actually in the source, which results in nothing going through, but we cannot know that yet.

Looks like your audio passthru options you have selected are not possible.

Try encoding your audio to AAC or AC3.

As Rollin says, you have two audio sources that handbrake can't "pass through":

Code: Select all

    Stream #0:1(eng): Audio: pcm_s16le
      44100 Hz, 2 channels, s16, 1411 kb/s (default)
    Stream #0:2(por): Audio: pcm_s16le
      44100 Hz, 2 channels, s16, 1411 kb/s
[11:46:48] Passthru requested and input codec is not the same as output codec for track 1, dropping track
If you do not have a fall-back encoder selected, "pass through" will ignore any tracks that don't match the pass through list.

So you have to encode them. For compatibility reasons, the defaults on handbrake's built-in presets is to use AAC. It is safest to leave this default, and override it when you KNOW the source track matches the output specification, i.e., you have AAC audio in the source.

That makes sense. I didn't want to re-encode the audio because in past the audio of my conversions ended up getting noticeably muffled.

Well, I'll try again next weekend, try to reduce 100GB of animations u.u'

Such a small collection... :)

If the animations are raw from BD, you'll see over 80% size reduction with RF22, and probably better than 70% at RF20 (what I normally use). DVD at RF22 will usually be around 200MB/episode (figure 24 minutes).

LPCM is popular with certain publishers, while others are more likely to use either AC3 or DTS. I prefer AC3 because I've also noticed that players tend to play AAC at a lower perceived volume level. Not to mention that the current AAC encoder in handbrake "has issues" with quality.

The highest compression I've got so far with RF 22 was 56%. 80% would be amazing.

And this is just a "small" piece added as a new member of the family ^_^

Only 56%? Is this with "noisy" backgrounds (grain or static)? Most anime from clean sources compresses very well. Noisy sources, not so much.

But I normally deal with BD or DVD sources, which do not start out very compressed.

"Some sources" have already been compressed once with h.264 or even h.265, so the compression within handbrake might not be that high.

I guess that's the case.

See, I just finish an encoding (4h... >.<) and got 51% reduction, but I used an RF of 20 instead of my usual 22. Still, the file size dropped from 2.46 GB to 1.26 GB, which is very helpful, but I wish I could shrink more.

My PC is a bit old to handle h.265 and the way I tried, through Adobe Premiere's unofficial plugin, I've got some colouring differences. Guess I'll wait until it gets more "popular"

56% of an already compressed source? With no indication of how compressed that source is relative to raw? This is meaningless.

Although I agree with you, considering that I saved 1.2 GB in this "compression of compression" process it still was a nice saving, especially in a country where the price per GB is ridiculously costly
